A Further 10 Plugins Used On My WordPress Blog
First of all I apologize for the delay in uploading this post. In my last post I did say I would post this in the next few days, my PC however had other ideas and refused to come out to play yesterday. So here I am working on my antique laptop trying to catch up.
In my last blog post I told you about 5 plugins that I feel are essential for my blogs performance. It was quite hard to pick just 5 as I use a few more that could be classed as either essential or extremely beneficial to myself, my traffic and of course my readers.
At the end of that post I said that I would detail 5 more plugins in my next post, this being it. However, as I said above choosing just 5 can be difficult, so I have chosen 10 plugins for this post, which are:
- Google Analytics for WordPress: The simple way to add Google Analytics to your WordPress blog. As I said above it was hard to pick just 5 plugins that are essential to my blogs performance and feel that this one should’ve been included as it is extremely important that you use Google Analytics to check on your blogs performance. The plugin has custom variables but the default settings will suffice for 90% of users. It can also add tracking to outbound links and downloads from your site. As I said it is very important that you check your stats in Google Analytics so that you’re aware of what is giving you the best results from your blogging efforts, thus allowing you to concentrate on those areas.
- WordPress Thread Comment: I simply love this plugin as it allows me to reply to comments and places my reply directly beneath the comment, no matter what the time gap is between the comment being left and my replying to it. It also send the commentator an email containing my reply, which helps continue the conversation. Please Note: WordPress does have a built in function for replying to comments however it is not compatible with all themes, where as this free plugin is.
- Subscribe To Comments: This one does what it says in the title, it allows our readers to subscribe to comments, so that when future comments are made they will receive an email to notify them of additional comments and each email will contain the comment. This is extremely beneficial to our readers as they can keep up with the conversation and gain additional info on a subject of interest to them. It also encourages them to come back and continue the conversation.
- SEO Super Comments: This is a neat little plugin that allows you to use your blog comments to generate more traffic. What it actually does is give the impression that every commentator has their very own dedicated page containing all of their previous comments, with a do follow link at the top of the page back to the commentators website. If you click on the name of a commentator you’ll see the page in action. In fact, why not find one of your previous comments and click on your name to display your very own page containing all of your previous comments. When I first started using this plugin I noticed an increase in traffic of between 20 and 25%. My online friend Michael Pedzotti wrote a detailed blog post about this plugin for the 100 Blog Comment Challenge.
- Post Teaser: This plugin generates a preview of your blog posts on your home, archive and category pages. It places a link at the bottom of the preview to read the full post and details the word count, image count and an estimated time of reading. Personally I think this plugin is very helpful at reducing our bounce rate as more posts are on display when a visitor lands on our site.
- CommentLuv: This is the plugin that shows a link to the last post on the commentators blog. It does this by parsing the feed at their given URL when they leave a comment. Which rewards your readers and encourages more comments. Also, if you register with commentluv then you will be able to select any of your previous five posts when submitting your comments, which is very handy if the post you are commenting on relates to a post that you have previously written.
- Do Follow: The Dofollow plugin overrides the dreaded Nofollow that WordPress install on their blogs. The nofollow attribute was to try and deter spam comments by not giving any link love to them. When the search engines come across a No Follow link they’ll do just that and not follow the link. By adding the dofollow plugin you override the nofollow rule and allow your commentators links to be picked up by the search engines. As long as you have Akismet installed then you’ll have the spam comments covered anyway.
- Keyword Luv: This one will reward your commentators by separating their name from their Keywords in the link to their website, giving them an improved anchor text. For example, when I leave Barry @ The Newbies Guide in the name field when commenting it will result in the following Barry from The Newbies Guide with the search engines. For this plugin to be affective you also need to install the Do Follow plugin mentioned above. Please Note: If you have the SEO Super Comments plugin installed then the keyword luv is transferred to the commentators dedicated page, as mentioned in the SEO Super Comments description above.
- Add To Any: Share/Bookmark/email Button This plugin helps your readers share your posts and pages with their friends and followers using services like Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, Digg and many more. It’s important that you put the tools in place for your readers to pass on your work. Prior to using this plugin I used Onlywire but found it slowed my loading time to much so changed to Add To Any where I saw an improvement straight away.
- Add Sig: This one will add a custom signature to the bottom of posts with the authors information. I use this to add the optin box for my email list beneath every post with the additional information about my offering Brandable eBooks when people sign up.
I know that people are concerned about having to many plugins on their blogs so thought I would pass on some information that Kathy Dobson told me in her comment to my previous post. Kathy simply pointed out that deactivating plugins isn’t enough to reduce our blogs loading time and that we need to delete the ones that we no longer use.
If you are concerned over your blogs loading time then please check out this post by Michael Pedzotti: A Simple Solution To A Bogged Blog
Please join the conversation and tell us your thoughts on these plugins and if you use different ones please tell us which ones and why….
Until next time, take care

Hi Barry!
Great overview of these plugins! I use several of them and have them to be very useful. My favorite is probably the Google Analytics one – I just LOVE being able to see a snapshot of my traffic stats right in my WordPress Dashboard!

Hi Jess, good to see you again my friend.
I’m glad that you liked the post and that you use many of the plugins. I didn’t know that we could see a snapshot of our traffic stats in our WP dashboard. I’ve been trying to find it since receiving your comment but can only find the settings page. I’ve been going over to Google Ananlytics to asses my performance and stats.
Could you tell me how to find the stats within our dashboards please Jess?
Have a great Christmas Jess and I wish you all the very best for the new year.
Respect and Regards, Barry

Hi Barry!
Oh, I just realized, I think I use a different plugin for Google Analytics… So that’s probably why. I use Google Analyticator, which adds a widget in the dashboard for the stats….
Sorry for the confusion on that! lol.

Hi Jess,
Thanks for popping back and clearing that up. I can stop looking for it now
I’ll have a look at Google Analyticator and see how it differs.
Catch up soon Jess,

Hi Barry,
Great stuff mate… I use some of them at the moment… probably as you recommended them to me in the past.
When I move my blog to my new host will come back here and get some of the others… the move should happen in the next few days.
Great information as usual.
Cheers
Bryan
Hi Bryan, First of all “Thank You” for stepping in on Patricia’s blog and answering my question on the tweet button, you saved me loads of time, thanks.
I hope the transfer goes ok my friend.
Have a fantastic Christmas Bryan and a prosperous new year.
Catch up soon, Barry

Hey Barry, thanks for the mention. I have still to tweak the SEO Super Comments plugin to improve it’s SEO benefits for the comment author as well. As soon as it is done you will be the first to hear about it. Note for readers: it is not my plugin but once I tweak it I will put it in the WP repository for all to share.
I am off to download the Google Analytics plugin now that you and Jess have recommended it, although I would have done it even if it was one or the other recommending it
Cheers, Michael

I look forward to your tweaked version of SEO Super Comments Michael and as soon as it is ready I’ll write another post about it to tell my readers about the improvements.
Wishing you and your family a fantastic Christmas Michael and a Happy & prosperous new year.

Hi Barry
Good list, I am currently rebuilding my the back end of my site so I will be checking out any from your lists that I’m not currently using.
One of my favorites is WP-Optimize and it does what it says on the tin.
Everytime you save a new post or pages, WordPress creates a revision of that post or page. If you edit a post 6 times you might have 5 copy of that post as revisions. Imagine if your post or pages are long.
It’s a huge number of bytes that is on your MySQL overhead. Now WP-Optimize allows you to optimize & shrink your posts table by removing not necessary post revisions from the database.
As example, if you have a post which is approximately 100KB data and you have 5 revisions of that post, the total space wasted is about 500KB. And if you have 100 posts similar to it, you have 50MB database space wasted.
here the link: http://www.ruhanirabin.com/wp-optimize/
It’s one I now use on a regular basis.
I’ll be back again soon, as soon as I get round to updating things. But as always there’s so much to do!
Speak soon Barry
cheers
Steve
Hi Steve, sorry for not replying sooner but i had to fish you from the spam folder.
Thanks for leaving the details of the WP Optimize Steve, I’ll be sure to look into it as my posts do tend to be quite long. I’m also trying to find something to compress my images to speed up my loading time, would WP Optimize help with that as well?
Best of luck with rebuilding the back end of your site Steve, I hope it all goes smoothly for you.
Catch up soon Steve, Have a great Christmas and a happy new year.

Handy list there Barry
I have most – buit will certainly look into some of the others
(The worry is always adding too many and slowing everything down… though your site loaded fine for me)

Hi Randy, sorry for the delay in my replying mate but I had to fish you out of the spam folder.
I know what you mean about plugins slowing our loading times down. I’ve been testing my loading times and have found a couple of concerning ones, which i haven’t included in the list and may remove if i can find alternatives that perform quicker.
Have a great Christmas and a happy prosperous new year Randy

Useful list Barry, thanks for the summary.
I have most of the plugins except Keyword Luv which won’t load on my blog. I have a bug somewhere and can’t upgrade automatically, and I have been too lazy to use Filezilla.
I will use the Add Sig plugin which I think is a good idea. However I am still deciding what to do about collecting eMail addresses, and won’t install it until I have an eMail strategy in place. I’m in no rush, so this may be some time yet.
I see your Alexa rating is still coming down nicely Barry, well done.
John
Hi John,
I recall others having problems with installing Keyword Luv during the Blog Challenge and would advise you visit http://www.scratch99.com/wordpress-plugin-keywordluv/ and followed the instructions there John. It is really simple to do but you will need to open Filezilla
to upload it.
The Add Sig is also really simple to install John and can be done via the WP Admin Panel.
I’ll be visiting you at some point today John, catch up then my friend.
Barry
Hi Barry,
And the best of success with your plans and projects for the New Year. I didn’t comment on this post about plugins in case you thought me a pest
But rest assured I do read your stuff. I don’t know what’s happened to my CommentLuv plugin? It seems to be struggling with my blog. It throws up the odd error message instead of posting my last entry on blogs. Maybe I need to reinstall or update or just post more live text. Been a bit lazy and leaving my blog full of auto adds. Well,it is the holiday season
All the best.
Just popped over to wish you and your family a Very Happy Christmas too here on your Blog
Gary T.
Hi Gary, you a pest? Seriously? Never Gary!! I honestly value your comments Gary and have never thought of you as a pest in any way shape or form. If ever there is anything that I can help with please let me know my friend and i’ll do what I can. Likewise if you have something to say with regard to a post please leave a comment and say what’s on your mind Gary.
Sorry to hear that you’re having problems with CommentLuv, have a look at http://comluv.com/help-desk/ and see if there is any advice there, I’ve just checked and there is lots of help available mate.
So you’re on the wind down to Christmas already…… If you’re snowed in, as I am, who could blame you Gary. Have a fantastic Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year. You’ve put a lot of effort in this year so pat yourself on the back and enjoy the holidays.

Thanks again, Alex.
Hi Alex, good to see you back.

Hi Barry
Thanks for the followup post. I don’t have all the plugins you have mentioned but have most of them.
It’s always interesting to read the reasoning behind each bloggers choice of plugins. Will get my techie friend to check if I need any of the ones I don’t have that you have mentioned.
Thanks for sharing with us Barry. Much appreciated.

Hi Barry
This wordpress plugin guide is great.
I was not sure what to use and as there is so much choice.
You really have created a must have list of plugins for WP and a excellent guide for any body starting out.
Thanks
Zahid
Hi Zahid, sorry for the delay in replying to your comment but i’m spending my time with my mum in hospital.
Yes there is lots of choices to be made when it comes to plugins and i’m pleased that this post has helped you decide which ones to use on your blog.
This post was the 2nd post on plugins Zahid and you may be interested in the 1st one as well, in fact you should check these out as they enhance your blogs performance.

Thanks for commenting Zahid, i’ll return the gesture as soon as i have a little more time.
R&R Barry
Hi Barry,
Out of the 10 plug-ins you mentioned I have all of them except three. I had most of them installed prior when we had the 100 comment challenge.
The SEO Super Comments plug-in is good it gives a nice page and keeps all your commentators comments however I have a hard time trying to find the commentators back link to their site. People that don’t know about this will look for the back link on the posts comment page. I know I’ve been guilty of this till a found the back link to my site. It was my name on my own comment page and had to really look for it.
The post teaser is just a matter of preference. I like people to see my full blown out post. They know I have other posts if they look for them. Looking for them, I believe would be a better quality blog reader. (just my opinion)
Now I do want add sig but can’t find it when I search for it in my word press plugin page. Did a search on Google for add sig and got a crazy page when I hit the down load button. It’s not called add sig, it’s called add wordprss signature. Is it the same one?? Can you send me a link on how to get it. Thanks Barry for all this valuable information.

A timely comment Terri. I am working on a small tweak to SEO Super Comments right now to change the link so that the author URL stays with the author name/keywords and the link to the extra comments page is on the gravatar.
The extra dynamic page that it generates is mostly for SEO/content purposes anyway so where it links from doesn’t matter to search engines as they follow all links anyway.
The author URL confusion has bothered me for a while but with CommentLuv enabled at least there is one good link back to each comment author’s blog.
The plugin is not my work but once I get the tweak working I will share the modified plugin files with my readers and suggest to the original plugin author that the change be put in as an option in the plugin settings page.

Hi Michael, thanks for popping over to inform Terry about the tweaks you’re making to the SEO Super Comments plugin.
The author URL does confuse quite a few people and i’ve had to explain it numerous times, however, like you said the commentluv link will often surfice.
The changes you’re making sound very exciting and I have to say that i’m looking forward to the end result, please keep me posted on it Michael.
thanks again, catch up very soon.
Respect and regards, Barry
Hi Terry,
I understand what you mean about the SEO Super Comments Terry, I’ve had people say to me about it before. But it all works with Keyword luv and i know that Michael Pedzotti of http://nine95.com is currently tweeking the plugin so as to get better results from it. I see that Michael replied to your comment and explained what he is doing with the plugin.
Post teaser is of course a matter of preference, I use it in the hope of reducing my bounce rate as many posts are displayed offering the reader a selection at first glance.
Sorry for confusion about Add Sig, my mistake there Terry. I got the name from my plugins section as that is what it is displayed as. The URL for it is:
http://www.dagondesign.com/articles/add-signature-plugin-for-wordpress
Again it’s very easy to install Terry.
I’m really pleased that you liked the post and are using most of the plugins, best of luck to you.
Respect and Regards, Barry
Barry, does Do Follow go by another name? I went searching earlier this am and could not find it. Thanks. Nice list.
