A Quick Way to Find a Bargain on eBay Time after Time
When I write about eBay it is normally with the business seller in mind and I offer advice on how to improve listings, titles, pictures and of course sales. I also try to bring my readers all the current Business Seller news and tips etc.
Today however I have a little strategy that I hope will help everyone save some money on their next purchase on eBay, and indeed every purchase there after.
As you know, when you look for an item to buy on eBay you enter a couple of keywords, relating to the item, into the search box and then make your way through the listings.
Next time you are looking to make a purchase on eBay try this:
Click on the Advanced Search link, beside the main search button. On the next page enter a couple of keywords, relating to your desired item, into the search box and add NR for No Reserve.
Scroll down the page a little and you will see Search Including and a check box for Title and description, click in the box to reveal a tick.
The next area is for Price with a section entitled show items priced from, again click the check box to reveal a tick and enter 0.01
Next is the Buying Formats area and you have 3 options. Auction, Buy Now and Classified. Click the check box for Auction to reveal a tick again.
The next area is Show Results and you have lots of options here, but I would advise you keep it simple to start with and click the check boxes for PayPal and Listings >Ending within and try entering 12 or 24 hours. Lower down in this same area you will see Delivery Options, Get It Fast, Free P&P and Collection In Person. Click the check box for Free P&P or Collection In Person, one at a time. Also try a search without checking this box for even more results, just watch the postage costs are not over charging you.
Please Note: If you choose Collection In Person then in the box below enter a maximum distance from you and your zip or post code.
Next section is the Item Location, which you should leave unchecked.
Currency is next, leave that on Any Currency.
Then we come to Sellers, and the first check box is for Only show items from: again leave this box unchecked as we want to search the bulk of eBay and not just from a specific seller. Just below this is an area entitled Seller Type and here we check the box to reveal a tick and then click the selection for Private.
Please Note: If you’re going to be looking for new items to resell on eBay then you may have a better result if you select Business seller in the seller Type. But try both to be sure of finding the best deal.
Only a few more choices to make and you’ll be able to see your search results.
Sort by, select Best Match
View results, select All Items
Results per page, you have a choice of 25, 50, 100 or 200, but it doesn’t affect your search.
Now Click the search button at the bottom and all will be revealed.
While I have been writing this blog post I have been completing the same search in exactly the same way as detailed above. As the sun is shinning through my window I searched for garden sets NR ending in 12 hours and found a table with 8 matching chairs, used but in good condition, to be collected in person and is currently at £5.50 with 8 hours remaining. The set sold for £35.02 which was still a very good deal to the right person, especially with the lack of spare money around these days.
I found a similar set from B&Q that has only 6 chairs and is priced at £440.33.
Resellers:
If you are looking to buy stock to resell on eBay then try this little gem.
Don’t enter any keywords in the search box, just the NR for No Reserve.
For the Category select Wholesale & Job Lots
Click the check box for searching Title and Description
For the Price enter From 0.01
In the Buying Formats select Auction
You will then be searching eBay and every listing in the wholesale category with no reserve that is starting at just 1p. Give it a try and see what you can find, you never know it could be the best result you’ve had yet.

Hi Barry, thank you for the searching methods. This will cut down on a lot of unproductive browsing time and will probably mean I can get a few things I’ve been looking for for less. I can’t wait to read the guide chapters, it sounds very clever.

Hi Barry, another great post, thanks. I was talking to a friend recently about ebay’s category changes. In particular my friend sells books and is no longer able to list them under a specific category, they are simply fiction or non fiction. Very frustrating if you are looking for a particular type of fiction, say ghost stories. If the person listing hasn’t used that term in the title or text you might never come across the listing, but if it was a category, as it used to be, they would be able to list their book in that section. Shame on ebay!
Enjoy the journey.
Mandy
Hi Mandy
I sympathize with your friend. For some reason eBay are hitting the book sellers for 6, which makes you wonder, why? Seeing as the largest stores that eBay have are Book Stores.
I used to sell many books on eBay but after their policy change after policy change I decided to move away from Books and haven’t bought any new stock for some time now. I still have many books for sale but with the limited postal charges I would lose over £6.00 per sale.
Now that the weather is changing I’ll be car booting them.
