Bloggers: Need A Little Lift?
Need A little help with your
Blog Writing
Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed many people trying to get blog owners posting to their blogs a bit more frequently. In fact that is why I wrote my last blog post, to give the new bloggers a little nudge of encouragement.
Since then Steve King and Jacinta Dean and have thrown down the gauntlet and started the “100 Blog Comment Challenge” AKA #100comments. Basically those that take up the challenge have to write a blog post and try to generate 100 comments for that post.
Personally I think this is a fantastic opportunity for every blog owner to get in the mix and get to know each other. This is exactly how you build relationships, with like minded people, that can become beneficial to us all for the long term success. How many times have you heard the saying “I don’t, but I know a man (or woman) that does”?
For my contribution to the challenge I’ve decided to continue the subject of blogging from my last post and try to offer some advice on how to construct a blog post. Now I’m no master blogger, not by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have some experience and it is this experience that I want to pass on to those that are new to it and may be struggling to try and keep their momentum going.
Did you notice that I said construct a blog post rather than write one? Well the reason I said that is because I think it is true for the new blogger. You see once you have experience and some success you will be able to write about it, but until then you have to construct your posts and to do that you need to research the subject that you’re writing about.
Researching a subject isn’t very hard. You obviously have a computer and an internet connection so visit Google and enter the subject you wish to research and forums in quotation marks, for example “weight loss forums”. I’ve just searched for that term and found 78,100 results. From there you enter some of these forums and begin to absorb the information, obviously making notes as you go.
The easiest way of making notes is to start a swipe file. A swipe file is a folder containing the notes that you have copied from these forums. You simply open notepad and paste in the information that you are using for your research and save it to the swipe folder. Note: You must never copy the swipe file into your post as that is plagiarism and illegal. You simply use it for researching your chosen subject.
Once you have done the research and gathered the information for the blog post write a draft copy in your word processor. I use open office writer as it spell checks everything for me. Don’t keep going back and correcting your spelling, do that all at once when you’ve finished writing the complete draft.
Next is keyword research, which may sound daunting but it really isn’t anything to worry about. Visit Google Keyword Tools and you will see the following screen:
Please click the image to see full size.
The trick now is to find alternative keyword phrases with a high search rate but low results. To do this you want to check the term on google again, but be sure to put the term in quotation marks, this will instruct google to search for the exact term and they will show you the results accordingly.
For Example:
“quick weight loss” produced 968,000 results, which is to much competition.
“weight loss advice” produced 159,000 results, much less competition.
You want less competition to have a better chance of being found by the search engines.
Now that you have your keyword phrases go back to your draft blog post and enter the keywords into your post, so as to have a flow of words that make sense.
Spell check the post now, and also check the grammar. When you’re happy with it save your work and come away from it for a little while. If you can, get someone else to proof read it. I always ask my wife or daughter to read all of my writings as fresh eyes tend to read it all and will spot any mistakes. When I try to proof read them I tend to speed read as I know what is coming and I do tend to miss my errors. If possible leave it over night and have another read in the morning, prior to posting it on your blog.
Please Note: Different people have different opinions about how many words should be in a blog post. Some say it should be between 200 and 400 words, while others say it should be at least 700 words. Who am I to say who’s right and who’s wrong, after all its their work on their blogs. For my blog posts I aim for 400 words but I will keep typing until I have given my readers the full story and that can sometimes be close to a thousand words. If the post is interesting and has a flow to it people will read it to the end. If, however, it has no flow and is hard to read people will just close the page meaning your efforts are wasted. Please bear this in mind when writing.
Okay, you’ve completed the post and are eager to publish it, so you post it to your blog.
Now you need to let people know that it is online, but before you do that I recommend that you install a plugin called Comment luv. This plugin places the title of your blog visitors last post below their comments, which in turn encourages them to leave comments.
Once you have the plugin installed it’s time to start visiting other blogs and leaving comments for their blog posts. Most blog owners will return the gesture and visit your blog to leave you a comment, especially if they see that you have comment luv installed as they know that it will generate them traffic back to their blogs in the future.
New Bloggers: I hope that you have found this post helpful and that it encourages you to post to your blogs more often. If so please leave me a comment and let me know, I will reply to every comment left.
Established Bloggers: As I said earlier I’m no master blogger, I’m just trying to help others with my experience. If you can add your tips to this post and pass on a little help we would be very grateful.
As always I welcome your comments, especially for this post as it is my contribution to the “100 Blog Comment Challenge”. Will I succeed or fail in my quest to reach 100 comments?
That, my friends, is now in your hands.
Please use the tweet buttons as well to send a tweet of this post to your followers.
Until next time, take care.

Hi Barry
Good advice. When I first started blogging I re-cycled content. I had written an ebook so I just chopped the ebook up into little chunks, re-wrote them a bit so that each chunk made sense on its own and used these for blog posts and articles.
I’ve posted a link to this page on identi.ca for you (makes a change from Twitter!)

I think many of us have done the same thing Martyn, I know that i have in the past. It’s a great way of getting started and showing people your writing style and the subject covered in your eBook.
Thanks for bookmarking me on identi.ca i’ll have to have a look into the site. Talking of Twitter, i’ve put a list together for the contributors to the challenge, if you could let me have your twitter name i’ll add you to the list.
I hope that everything with you is going well, catch up soon Martyn.

Hi Barry,
I also think this is a terrific idea, not only to get your blog ranked and get traffic but also to meet other like minded people who are after the same things you are. Internet marketing and online business is great but if you don’t know anybody in the business when you’re first starting out it can be a little tough.
With the 100 comment challenge, it is easy because the people involved want to hear from you , whereas if you just go anywhere to any blog for the first time, most people are like, “who is this guy?”
So we are kind of like kindred spirits in a quest for a better life and a fulfillment of a dream together. It’s very exciting. I myself have had hardly any comments on my blog since the challenge and to see so many now it’s nice. Real nice.
So good luck out there 100 post bloggers and do your best to develope those so important relationships that will help you keep going when the going gets tough.
Take Care and hope to be hearing from you all soon.

Hi Steve, thanks for coming over and commenting.
I have to agree with you Steve, the challenge is a win win all the way around. The contributors get a better ranking, we build relationships and gain knowledge as we go.
I know that my blog has improved as i’ve been implementing some of the tips as i’ve been going through the list of posts.
I have to be honest Steve, i have at times felt that by commenting on someones blog they may think “who’s this guy?”, but i have never had a bad responce to anything i’ve said. In fact, i’ve had the opposite happen, where by the blogger offers support and most of the time they will visit my blog and give me words of encouragement. Even now with this challenge, some of the experienced bloggers have been reading other posts and leaving positive comments.
It’s good of you to mention the importance of building relationships.
A little tip: If you subscribe to comments of a post and then see someone having difficulties with something Jump in and offer some help, they Will remember you for it.
Best of luck Steve, if you’re on twitter please let me have your twitter name and i’ll add you to the twitter list i have for the challenge.
Take care, Barry

Hi Barry,
Your post outlined keyword researching down to a tee. While I’m not into constructing posts more as into the writing process, I will soon have to construct them as I’ve begun an article writing challenge. So these tips will come in handy to remind me what it is that I need to do.
The thing about keyword research is you got to like the process. I don’t really like that. I like the writing part but I have to make do as if I want any sales, then construct it is. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on boosting a blogger up. I appreciate it.
Cheers!

This is just what I need – when I started I just blethered about what I had been doing – but there comes a time when that is not enough for the readers!
I’ve thought of topics but never thought to do keyword research before finalising and publishing my blog.
would you suggest I go back and do it to old blogs or just do it from here on in?

I wouldn’t recommend going back over your work, unless it is very recent Jennifer, we could keep going back and changing bits and pieces forever.
Personally it drives me potty going back and changing things, although sometimes it is needed for broken links etc.
I’d start to use some keyword research in your new work load. It’s always better to work on something new than it is going back, much less frustrating.
Thanks for commenting Jennifer, i hope that i’ve been of some assistance.

Hi Barry!
You give such great advice for new bloggers and established ones. Even if you’ve been blogging for a while, you still might need to “construct” a post every now and then!
Once you develop a “relationship” with your blog, you wont be able to detach yourself from it LOL That comes after you forget about the “technology” (the plugins, the Google Analytics, the graphics, etc) and just focus on the writing and sharing and meeting new people.
Thanks again for a great post!

Hi Barry
An excellent piece. Most of all it may me give myself a slapped wrist for falling out of the habit of inserting key word phrases in my posts.
Another useful tip I was given was to split my blogs up into 3 types:
1) Insightful – let your readers know what’s going on inside your head so that they start to empathise with you.
2) Content – provide content from stuff you’ve either researched or figured out yourself. I love being able to share stuff like when I changes the RAM in my PC and it worked!
3) Product recommendations – this can include affiliate links. Use this sparingly and only on products you have checked out and are happy to recommend. Every time you use it you’re drinking from the well of goodwill you’ve built up with your readers. So remember to fill the well back up again.
Thanks as well for your comment on my blog.
Best regards
Doug
P.S. As many of us students of JT’s coaching courses I thought it might be bit of fun to find out who’ll own up to being the slowest student. I think my time of 19 months from beginning of course (16 weeks) to product launch is a good starting point. Anyone else care to join in?
Twitter: barry_wells
Hello Doug, thanks for leaving such a great comment.
I’m glad that you were able to take something from it and i’m really pleased that you have left these great tips for everyone to take note of.
They’re all very true and i especially like the third. I only promote things i’ve used or reviewed on my blog, I leave the promotional side of things to my lists, and then i’m pretty chosey as to what i will send out.
Drinking from the well of goodwill is a very good way of putting Doug, after all it the relationship we’re after and we have to build that ourselves.
umm slowest student…….19 months eh? How about still doing it from Feb 2009, that’s 18 months so far and i go back into hospital at the end of the month so it’ll be getting longer. Mind you it is a 36 week course……that turned into a 42 weeks. JT always over delivers.
Please Note: while Doug and i are joking here please note that John Thornhill’s courses have stayed online for us to complete as and when we can. Like Doug said 19 months for a 16 week course. The important thing is that you finish the course no matter how long it takes you and JT allows that.
Sorry Doug had to get that in as didn’t want people getting wrong idea of our joking about.
Like you said “anyone else want to own up to time taken?”
Catch up soon Doug,
R&R, Barry
Hi Barry
Your comment just reminded of another reason that I would always recommend John Thornhill’s courses and stuff (technical term) in general is that you always get the option of downloading as well as viewing online. Other courses I have bought give you access theoretically forever but won’t let you download.
I don’t know about you but I feel much happier when I’ve got it saved on to my hard drive and backed up.
Good luck with your imminent hospitalisation – hope all goes well.

I’m really pleased that the post has been of help to you.
Vince, Notepad is the most used program on my PC, next to Firefox. I use it for just about every note i make, fast editing html pages and saving codes etc.
Mind you Vince I’ve still got 4 sheets of notes written out beside me as i type ha ha so the pen is still a big part of my tool kit.
With the keyword research I’d spend a little time just messing about with it to get the hang of it before you need to enter it into your work. There’s nothing worse than trying learn and implement in a hurry, it leads to that dreaded state of stress and none of us want that.
Best of luck Vince, catch up again soon, Barry

Thanks for sharing your insights, Barry. It definitely takes practice to craft a truly magnetic, sticky blog post. And with every new post they become better. Thanks for encouraging new bloggers. It’s true: everyone can use a little lift
One invaluable tip that I learned was to focus on my natural skills and interests. It makes any task easier and more fun. In blogging, this has the added benefit of generally not needing to do research beforehand. The topics I blog about are already part of my mental landscape. The research phase is done organically as I’m following my interest in a topic. Then the idea for a blog post comes to me and I can just get straight to writing.
I feel this would work wonderfully for new as well as experienced bloggers. What do you think?
Peace,
Lauren

Hi Joelle, thanks for leaving your comment.
It’s good that you put your thoughts into your blog posts, it lets your readers get to know You which helps build trust and long term relationships. The trick is to try and use some keywords as well so as to feed the search engines.
Remember though Joelle your post may be found by search engines but as one of the tips above said, it is read by humans and that is where your thoughts and personality come into it.
When writing your post, write as you normally would then have a look at the subject and see if you can find some good keyword phrases to slip into it.
As long as you maintain the flow you’ll be able to please both the search engines and the readers that come as a result of them.
Best of luck Joelle,

To provide great content and value to your readers, the research phase is indeed a must. Especially if your blog post intend to provide any help, advice or answer to your readers.
Of course you can blog just about your own opinion on the subject, but I believe that if you spend some minutes getting additional information or consolidating the information you already have, you can create real magnetic posts. And your readers will come back for sure.

Barry, I’ve used the swipe file method in forums that I am a member of. I search on my subject and ferret out the nuggets that are posted. Being knowledgeable of the material being discussed allows me to generate my post or article from those triggers. I personally agree with the 400 minimum on posts imparting knowledge or information. If it’s a personal anecdote or thought though–I write until I get my moral or point across.
Your advice, of course, is also beneficial in writing articles as the process, at least for me is virtually the same. For are we not writing articles for our own emagazine by blogging?

Hi Barry
Thanks for the wonderful pointers in your article. They are useful to all bloggers, whether beginners or experts. What’s important to remember is the objective of why we are writing the blog in the first place.
Just to add on to your Google Keyword Tool, it would help in our Google ranking if we were to consider the keyword density of our articles. SEO professionals suggest an average of 3% – 7% keyword density for relevant phrases. In additional, it’s important for relevant keywords to appear in the first few paragraphs of our articles, and preferably within the first two sentences.
All the best in your online business!

Great article Barry,
Using the information already out there to create a post of your own is only smart.
What you should do is credit the original creater of the content by linking to them like you would in a regular book, example: “Just like X said in his post ….”
That way you stay honest, show that you are doing the work of finding good information all over the net for your readers and you might even get a relationship going with the blogger you credited, all bloggers eagerly monitor their trackbacks and will be over joyed to see you linking to them (hopefully they will do the same for you!).

I also agree that it will help build relations that will hopefully grow and benefit both.
In my post though Daniel i didn’t say about using other peoples blog posts. I said about visiting forums and seeing what people are looking for and begin to absorb the information, making notes as you go and copying those notes into a swipe file. I also pointed out Not to copy others work as it is plagiarism and illegal.

Very true Barry, though I do think you can link to threads in a forum as well as it benefits your readers to find a forum about a subject they like.

Hi Barry,
This post is very helpful. To just get the blog up and running I took a good few months, didn’t know about what to write and the basic plugin’s like keyword luv then, so I’m sure newbies to intermediate marketers would get loads of this post.
I think its important to research the content when we’re starting out with blogging until we develop knowledge and the skills.
My additional comment (2 cents
) – blog is our virtual identity and it should represent “us”, who we are and our personality. I would mark my blog success – when my reader meet me in future and they know me and we do NOT seem as if we are meeting for the first time though – I would say I have been successful to some extent. That’s only my personal humble opinion!
Cheers!

Hi Abizer, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
I’m pleased that you liked the post and have been able to take something from it. I know exactly what you mean about getting your blog up and running. I spent months thinking about it due to being unsure of what to write about, what a waste of time that was.
If you would like to know about some other plugins that I have found very helpful for my blog follow this link to an earlier blog post of mine. Be sure to read the comments as there are some great tips and additional plugins named:

I totaly agree with your (2 cents
) comment Abizer. I have said in the passed that our blogs are like our virtual office windows, and that we should allow our readers to look through and get to know us a bit better.
I also agree that our future meetings should build upon our last meet up and that we should not appear to be meeting for the first time. This is one aspect of blogging that i really enjoy, especially when the blog owner remembers us.
Thanks again for your comment Abizer, hope to catch up again very soon.

Hi Barry,
Nice post from a body who is not a master blogger. I have learned a lot from this post. Thank you. Now all I need do is decide to be a blogger. Something I do not fancy doing much of. I tend to be lazy and scrape others peoples articles and post them for good content. Things like this post.
I think you are headed for your hundred comments if not exceeded them by now.

Hi Barry,
One thing I wasnt sure about at the start was what mix of personal and business related posts to make.
For the 100 comment tag I’ve tried to mix the two a bit and also reveal information about my progress that people normally keep to themselves.
Time will tell if this works out…
Thanks

Great post! I never really thought about the fact that when I first started blogging I was not writing my blog posts but I was actually constructing my blog posts. But this is exactly what I was doing. I was getting ideas form other bloggers about topics to blog about.
Blog commenting is definitely a way to start getting people interested in your blog. It is important to actually write valuable and informative comments to entice the other readers to want to click on the link back to your blog.
Good luck to you!

Hi Barry,
I don’t know about blog writing advice but I think there is a lot of additional advice there as well.

Yes I liked the post!! The only post I have constructed so to speak are the summaries of JT’s Masterclass. Most of my other blog posts have been just written as I think.
I know in the future I will probably construct the posts better and do more target research on what keywords I want to target for each post, that will come as I start writing about the seminar speakers I have seen. Once I completely finish JT’s stuff that is what I will be writing about next.
Hope all is going well. I will keep you posted on the challenge results.

Hi Barry,
Good solid advice.
All too often I see people blogging on topics unrelated to the subject matter to their blog, or being too broad in their topic. The keyword research is paramount and an area worth spending time on.
In fact the biggest mistake I see is marketers not paying close attention to their headline. In the same way I may write 25 different versions of a headline for a sales letter I believe the same amount of thought should go into composing the right title for a blog.
Marketers will only bother to click on your listing if the headline hits all the sweet spots and critically offers up a benefit for the reader.
How to do X easily and quickly in x minutes isn’t exactly an original headline but in many cases this will win over so many other headlines that don’t consider the blog from the readers point of view and why they should spend x amount of minutes reading it.
Once again thanks again for your blog post.
Kind Regards
Andy

Hi Barry,
You picked a very good topic for your 100 Blog Comments Challenge and this is information every blogger should have. I have often struggled with what the best length of a blog post should be since being a part of MasterClass.
After reading your post and some of the comments here, I agree that you should write as many as you want to keep the post interesting and flowing. This doesn’t mean writing a book, of course.
I like your method of constructing a post and I will definitely borrow some of these tips for my own posts. I only wish I had more time available, as this challenge has showed me that there is some really good material on the MasterClass blogs. There is so much that can be learned from reading posts and the comments!

Hi Tej, welcome to my blog and thank you for leaving a comment.
I’m glad that you liked the post and hope that you’ve been able to take something from it.
How can you stand out from the crowd? By giving your readers as much value as possible in a complete, and relevent, post. I wouldn’t write the same post as someone else has, unless you feel that the original post is incorrect or has important information missing.
John Lennon once said “If it’s already been done why do it again? Make something original of your own”
I hope that helps Tej, thanks again for your comment.

Interesting information. I write very differently, but I can appreciate your tips. In fact, I generally incorporate most of them, but not in the same order or fashion. My best writing starts with writing from the top of my head – whatever is on my mind. Then I go back and refine it. Things like SEO come last, if at all.
Still, for driving traffic, your advice is rock solid. Thanks for the refresher.

Hi Alex, welcome to my blog.
Yes i did receive a lot of comments during the 100 comment blog challenge Alex, which was as a result of my commenting on every blog that was involved.
When you say start a swipe file of good emails, do you mean the content of the emails? If so then i would recommend that you re-write them into your own words. I don’t use swipe files for emails Alex as i make my emails as personal as i can, which helps build trust and allows my subscribers to get to know me a little better. Not only that but if send them someone elses email as mine it makes me look like a copy cat and would work against me. Like i said though Alex, if you re-write them into your own words you won’t have a problem.
I’m really pleased that you found my blog so valuable in its content, feedback like that is priceless, thank you.
I’ll pop over to your blog later today Alex and leave you a comment.
