WordPress plugins; they’re great aren’t they? We add them to our blogs to add a number of different features and values in the quickest way possible, often unaware of the issues they could cause.

Security, resources, conflicts and loading times to name a few.

Plugins use different scripts and javascripts so when people open our posts or pages they kick in and do their job, fetching and sending information here, there and everywhere.

The trouble is that the more we add to our blogs the slower they become and if we’re not careful we can end up doing more harm than good.

On occasions there is only One plugin to carry out certain tasks so we have to go with that particular plugin if we want that certain “job” doing, Akismet and Commentluv Premium for example.

Many a time though there are a number of plugins that do exactly the same job as each other so it’s up to the blog owner to choose which one to use they want to use.

Take social sharing plugins for example, there’s 100′s available. Sexy Bookmarks, Twitter Facebook Social share, Share Bar, Socialize, Digg Digg, Add This………… The list goes on and on.

We have plugins for our security, special offers, list building, affiliate marketing, images, signatures, audios…… Again the list goes on and on, you name it and there’s a plugin for it.

Most of us have plugins to cover all of those jobs (and many more) but when it comes to installing plugins do you:

• Install one, wait a week and check its performance?
• Install one when you see something you want to add to your blog and never give it a second thought?
• Install one after another and never really give them much thought until you have an issue of some sort?

Do you ever check your plugins performance and the impact they have on your blogs?

Broken Links Arrrggghhh Another Nightmare

Since creating the video I read a post by Dee Ann Rice entitled My Blog Loads Slow, which contains some fantastic information and great tips for speeding up your blog. I’m already using most of the methods and tools that Dee Ann mentions but a new one to me was Finding Broken Links.

I don’t know how often people check their blogs for broken links, if at all, but in my 3 years of blogging I never had…… Until this week and I was truly amazed at the amount I found on this blog.

Just over 18……Thousand…. Yeah, shocking isn’t it. Poor maintenance that will not happen again, now I know where to check and how to fix them I’ll be doing so on a regular basis.

Many of the broken links were commentluv links from people that had stopped blogging altogether which also meant their domains had gone as well.

Some were caused by posts being deleted or having the permalinks changed, whilst others by blogs being moved or deleted and re-installed.

They were quite easy to solve as I made a note of the peoples names, went to the comment section of my WordPress admin panel, searched for comments from that person, removed the commentluv and deleted the URL’s that were now dead. Doing it this way made it really easy to remove the links as they were all shown on the same page, or in some cases pages as there were some that had 4 or 5 pages of comments where I had to remove broken links.

I’ve managed to get the number of broken links down to 157 so far this week and the majority of them are links within my posts where I’ve linked to other peoples posts. All I’ll do there is edit the post and remove the links, without fear of ping spamming thanks to MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer.

So if you haven’t checked your blogs for broken links be sure to do so, it’s free at Broken Link Checker and all you need to do is enter your domain name and a security code (when the page changes) and it will scan your domain.

It will take some time to complete the scan but you can get to work straight away by selecting the errors as they start to appear, simply click the src link to display the error, location and who wrote it, if it’s a comment. Copy that to your notepad doc and start removing them.

There’s no way of keeping up with the scan so once it has been completed be sure to access your report, you’ll see the link on the page. Save the URL so you can come back to it, or visit:

http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/broken-link-report.php?site=domain_here 

Work from that so as to save your blog resources as it is a scan of 3,000 pages, which when repeated to often may make a dent in your resources

I then copied all the peoples names and a brief description of the errors to a notepad doc and worked from that, deleting each one as I went. I found it a quicker way to work and with 18,000 links to remove I didn’t want to hang about

Now that I have the numbers down to 157 I will remove them for an hour or two a day until I’ve worked through my list then I’ll run another scan to make sure I’ve got them all.

If you’ve visited my blog any time since February 16^th you’ll know that I’ve been holding a Video Blog Challenge since February 29^th until March 29^th and that I’ve been holding a traffic competition for the same period.

Today’s the day that I announce the winner of the competition and send the prizes to that lucky person…… but before I do that, here’s a little summary.

There really are some fantastic videos with everyone sharing their knowledge and helping us all progress online.

As it is a leap year my aim was to encourage people that had never created videos before to start doing so and make this leap year somewhat special. Kind of like a leap of faith or to leap on the fear of creating videos and kick it into touch (if that was the case).

Well I’m extremely pleased to announce that we were able to encourage 7 people to start making videos for the first time and I hope that they continue to do so.

In the video below I name those 7 people as well as The Top Ten Traffic Sources for the period of the challenge and the Winner of the Camtasia and Snagit Licences.

The Top Ten Traffic Sources For The Video Blog Challenge

To qualify for the Traffic Competition the participants had to submit at least 4 videos during the challenge period, however some couldn’t do so due to off line commitments and poor health. I know as well as anyone that life gets in the way sometimes and as hard as we try it’s just impossible to get things done online during those times.

Therefore if any of the participants that couldn’t complete the 4 videos during the challenge period would like to add to them at a later date please feel free to do so. Simply let me have the URL to your posts and I will add it to The Video Blog Challenge page.

Creating, editing and producing videos is really good for your business but we also need to ensure that they’re found on YouTube to help drive traffic to your blogs and Social Media accounts.

Unfortunately I see so many people upload their videos to YouTube, enter a brief description and think that their work is done. This is a huge mistake to make as they’re potentially missing out on the traffic that YouTube offers, let’s not forget that YT is ranked 3rd in the world and is the 2nd largest search engine.

Once you’ve finished producing your videos don’t rush to upload them as you still need to apply a little bit of research for your title, descriptions and tags making them all keyword rich. Without doing this you run the risk of your videos going unnoticed by those searching YouTube and I should imagine that it is pretty disheartening after all the work that has gone into creating the videos in the first place.

In the video below I show you how I do my researching on YouTube and I point out some mistakes that others are making in their descriptions.

When it comes to recording your PowerPoint Presentations, or videos in general for that matter, there are quite a few choices of software to use; Camtasia, CamStudio and Jing to name a few. But when it comes to editing and producing your videos Camtasia is by far the best I have experienced.

Camtasia do offer a free trial but you will eventually have to purchase it, unless of course you’re lucky enough to win it in competitions such as the one I’m holding during the challenge and some will find it expensive, however in my opinion it is worth every penny as long as you’re going to use it.

There are free options available which I demonstrated last week in the video, Using Free Software To Record Your PowerPoint Presentations.

In this weeks video I show you how to record your PowerPoint Presentations using Camtasia, how to edit them, add the bookends that I include in my videos and a few other features that Camtasia offers.

Challenge Update:

I’m adding to the Video Blog Challenge on a daily basis and I’m really pleased by the quality of videos being submitted. There are some fantastic tutorials on a number of subjects and I know that they’ll help loads of people for a long time to come.

There’s still a week to go until the end of the challenge and already some people have submitted the Four videos needed to qualify for the Traffic Competition that I’m holding for the period of the challenge. If you’re one of those people then please feel free to add a fifth video if you’d like to

Using Free Software
To Record Your
PowerPoint Presentations

When it comes to creating videos there are two things holding people back in my opinion, Cost and Confidence.

Confidence: While I try to encourage people to face their fears and progress online, offering assistance when and where it’s needed, that’s about all I can do. The rest is up to the individual, if you really want something then you have to take the steps needed to achieve it.

I know as well as anyone how fear can hold you back but during the Learn With Sally coaching I made the decision that I would face my fears head on and kick them into touch.

Once you have overcome them there’s nothing holding you back and you really do start to take huge strides towards your goals and feel so much better for it. Just look at the people taking part in the video blog challenge, we all started the same way: Facing our fears, overcoming them and progressing online.

Do you remember your first driving lesson? Did you panic at the sight of a car coming towards you? Did you have the radio switched off because it distracted you?

Look at how you drive now, windows down, music playing, whistling away, seeing the oncoming traffic and not even thinking about it now because you have the experience and have built your confidence.

It’s the same with everything in life, experience builds confidence.

Cost: When people first start looking into creating videos they hear all about Camtasia, see the price and lots of people think “oh well, maybe when I’ve made some money online” and then give up on their video ideas.

You don’t need Camtasia to create good videos as there is free software available online that can get you up and running in no time at all.

Last year I held a video challenge on my blog and invited everyone to start creating videos and get them uploaded to YouTube and added to your blog posts.

I think the challenge went well and we had some fantastic entries, however it was a little rushed and didn’t give some people enough notice…..

Well I’ve decided to hold another video challenge and as it’s a leap year I’m going to step it up a bit and spread the challenge out for four weeks.

Starting on February 29^th through until March 29^th I’m inviting everyone to create videos and place them on their blogs.

This gives everyone four weeks of video posts where you can demonstrate your skills in any given subject related to Internet Marketing.

We all know that we’re limited on what we can do in a ten minute video but with four weeks we now have a minimum of 40 minutes so we can do a series of videos to bring our viewers back week after week for parts 1 2 3 and 4.

If you’ve been creating videos for sometime you’ll have at least an hour to demonstrate your “thing” and show us all the how’s, what’s and where’s of your skills.

The challenge is open to everyone and I’d like everyone to have a go and see what they can create, even if you’ve never created videos before….

….it’s a leap year, so leap on your fears and put them behind you.

The video entries must relate to some form of Internet Marketing so with 4 weeks worth you should be able to create some excellent tutorials.

If you have a skill then show it to us all and you may even pick up some new clients.

A few ideas to get you thinking…

If you’re into your Social Media you can demonstrate a different network with each video: Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus and LinkedIn for example could have a video of their own for each consecutive week.

Maybe you’re into your Graphics, in which case you could show us how you go about creating a mini site or eBook covers or both…

Maybe you could demonstrate an easy way of making money online and show people what tools you use, this would allow you to add your affiliate links to your posts…..

Maybe you use a certain program that makes things easier for your working day, if so give us a demonstration…..

Maybe you have PhotoShop skills that you could show us, I know I’d like those ones

Maybe you’ve set up a sales funnel and want to show others how they can do it as well….

Maybe Giveaway events are your thing, in which case show us how you set your funnels up….

Maybe you have some gigs going on Fiverr, in which case show us all the process….

Maybe you have a new site to launch and want to highlight what it’s all about….

Maybe you’re a whiz with video editing….

List building techniques….

Backing up your blog….

Installing your blog from a back up….

Installing a new blog theme….

Using gmail and creating folders and rules….

Creating cloaked affiliate links….

Uploading new websites….

Uploading graphics….

The list is endless but I’m sure you get the idea

Once you have your videos and posts ready let me know and I’ll add your link to a new page on my blog each and every week.

I would also like you to visit other blogs in the challenge, watch their videos, leave decent comments and share them with your friends and followers on the social media sites. If we all do this for each other then we all help each other generate traffic, over and over so we all benefit.

I will also be holding a competition.

I have licences for both Camtasia and Snagit that I will be putting up as a prize to the person that brings me the most traffic from now until March 29^th and has entered videos for the four weeks of the challenge.

It doesn’t matter about the quality of your videos just as long as you’ve created 4 during the four weeks of the challenge and that they’re related to Internet Marketing in some form or another, even a tour of the software you use in your work.

The lucky winner will have nearly £300.00 worth of software FREE, isn’t that a prize worth having

The winner will be announced on April 5^th in a video where I will detail the top ten traffic sources for the competition. I always have the Social Media networks in my top ten traffic sources but for this competition I will only be counting people and their blogs

So get writing posts mentioning the challenge, inviting others to take part and start sending traffic here from today and you could be that lucky winner.

Many of you already know that I am currently taking part in the Learn With Sally coaching and regular visitors to my blog would have noticed plenty of changes to my blog since I started the coaching, proof of which you’ll find at the bottom of the post

As the coaching got under way Sally told us that she would be holding a competition to see who could generate the most traffic to their blogs for the last few weeks of August.

So I brought forward my plans for the Video blog challenge and held it…… during August

On my part there were 3 posts to the challenge:

The first was to announce it, explain the guidelines and invite everyone to take part, as well as explaining the Two posts that would follow.

The second post, Challenge Takers: Experts, 2nd Timers, Video Virgins and A Dark Horse, detailed and linked to all of the entries, with some fantastic tutorials, and the third post to detail my Top Ten Traffic Sources for the challenge period.

Not only did the challenge encourage a lot of people to start creating videos and placing them on their blogs but it also generated traffic for me and everyone else that entered, so it was a win win for everyone involved really.

None more than myself, because after the live webinar on the 1^st of September Sally announced the winner, which was me With Dawn Kay coming a very close second

So why has it taken me so long to write this post and tell you all about it?

Well the prize was a Kodak ZI8 Video camera, which Sally has bought twice now through Amazon and twice been messed about by the sellers.

It would appear that the Kodak ZI8 is rarer than Rocking Horse pooh and some people are listing them when they know they haven’t got them in stock, just to take peoples money, mess them about and then offer them an alternative model.

Sally was messed about for weeks by the first seller, who had marked the item dispatched and then ignored all of her emails. Only to suddenly come back saying “sorry we had a glitch in our system” and “the items out of stock……would you like an alternative?”…… Errrr no a refund

So Sally went back to Amazon to try and find it again but alas couldn’t so she emailed me explaining the situation and asked what I’d like to do. I replied saying that it didn’t need to be that particular model as any video camera would be gratefully received.

Sally went back to Amazon and guess what…….. There’s a Kodak ZI8 listed so she checked the sellers feedback, which was good, and bought it.

Only to get messed about for weeks again and then receive an email offering an alternative or a refund…… by cheque, the cheek of it!!

Now I should point out that during this time Sally was suffering from a bad case of flu and was having to get up out of her sick bed to try and sort this out for me, bless her.

Everyone working online knows how important it is to start building an email list and having an opt-in form available for people to subscribe to our lists.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, I see so many blog owners using the wrong method of applying their opt-in forms to their blogs. One of my pet hates is getting to blog, start reading the content and then 60 seconds later up comes a pop up that covers the screen and stops me reading.

Now I know that it’s their blog and they can apply what they want to it. But isn’t the point of a blog to allow people to read our content?

So why would we want to interrupt our visitors when they’re reading?

I don’t like pop ups on a blog or those ones that slide up from the bottom and I know I’m not alone in this. Personally if I get to a blog, start reading the content and a pop up then stops me reading I’m going to leave the blog altogether, unless those few lines that I’ve read have really grabbed my attention.

There are other ways of adding an opt-in form to our blogs. We can place them in our side bars, as I have done over on the right of the blog. Or we can add them to our blog posts, as I have also done.

Don’t worry, we don’t have to set this up for every post as we set it up once and it’s automatically added to every post on your blog, both new and old
