Hey Barry,
Nice blog you have here!
Although I have never done an interview product it is widely accepted by many coaching programs (wont mention any names) as the quickest and easiest way to learn the process of creating and releasing a product. Personally I decided to create a video product, mainly because it’s in a niche I have some experience in. But those brand new to IM should seriously consider using an interview as their first product as it will help you look an authority in your chosen niche.
I can also vouch for Audacity for recording, although there are lot’s of great free Skype recording apps out there. However I found Camstudio to be quite poor. I had problems with sound card compatibly and videos longer than a few minutes take an age to process when you stop recording. I can recommend another free screen or camera video recorder called BB Flash Express http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBackExpress/Home.aspx which has proven to work really well with processing of even long videos taking just seconds. I hope this helps your readers. Keep up the good work!

Hi Martin, welcome to my blog.
Yes Martin, this for sure is one of the quickest, easiest ways of creating a product and is ideal for people that haven’t created any products before.
What kind of video product are you creating Martin?
Thanks for vouching for Audacity, like I said I’ve never used it but know people who have and they like it. I understand your point about CamStudio, it was when saving the file that Sylviane had issues with it.
Thanks for telling me and my readers about BB Flash Express, it’s always nice to mention free tools especially when they’re recommended by those that have used them. Many of us need to know about these tools when first starting out and then we’ve got the bit between our teeth we can then make purchases for things like Camtasia.
It sure will help my readers, thanks Martin.
Take care, Barry

Hi Barry,
Nice post, you’ve mention some good tips for getting started doing interviews. I got Cam Studio and am still trying to learn it. So far it looks good. I do have a couple of issues with it though. One is there seems to me no way to blank out personal information while doing screen casts. But I could be wrong. Any Ideas? I like the look of Camtasia its good but it’s a bit pricey.

Hi Ed,
I’m glad that you like the tips in the post and hope that they help you start interviewing people mate
I used to use CamStudio and created a video show how i had it set up:
http://barry-wells.com/the-software-i-use-to-make-these-videos/
Unfortunately mate there isn’t a way of blanking or blurring a part of the screen with the software. What I used to do was reduce the size of the capture area to suit what i was comfortable showing in public. It did make it hard though, but can be done Ed.
I know what you mean about Camtasia being pricey, but once you’ve used it you’ll love it mate…. I know I do
Thanks Ed,
Take care mate,
Barry

Hey Barry…
Hope you’re well mate?
I loved this post…as you know I conducted a Skype Interview with Ron Barrett and Ron and I created a two part mp3 product out of it called *Listbuilding Insiders*…and I have to say you’re on the money when you talk about how easy it is to create a product using this platform!
As time goes by I will be conducting more…not just for the product creation side of things but I always enjoy talks on Skype so to me it’s double barrel…anyway Barry take care mate theres a lot of great advice for product creation right there!
Ed.
Hi Ed,
Things are going well this end thanks mate
Yourself?
Yes I knew that you and Ron had got your heads together for Listbuilding Insiders. It’s a great way to start creating products isn’t it….
Skype chats can reveal so much on a more personal level as we can really pick each others brains in private, so to speak. So yes mate I agree with the double bubble view you have, its a win win for everyone
I hope your latest venture is coming along well.
Catch up soon Ed,
Take care mate,
Barry

Great post Barry.
I’m yet to venture into the interview arena, but this post surely helps.
The Pamela looks like the easiest option by far and very inexpensive.
Did you find it easy to work with? Any problems?
Cheers,
Des

Hi Des,
Glad you like the post and that it has helped. You really should give it a try mate
Pamela is really easy to use. When you start a Skype chat it’ll automatically bring up a box asking if you want to record the call and give you a count down.
I always select NO as I like to chat before starting the recording, but all I do then is go to Pamela and hit the record button when I’m ready.
I did have an issue with it once on my old PC, but then I had issues with most things on that pile of …….
Anyway Pamela support came straight back to me with a solution, and when i changed PC’s they told me now to buy again and gave me the download and license details.
Give the free trial a go Des and see what you think mate… but (in the words of Randy Smith) only if you’re going to use it
Thanks Des,
Take care mate,
Barry

I know you’ve been busy with other projects Barry but I’ll be excited to finally hear that interview. I’m just so glad that went off without a hitch.
I use Audacity to record things and it’s really pretty easy so I would think recording a Skype conversation would do just fine as well. I’ve never tried that but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Obviously Jean uses it so it must work well.
Sylviane had told me the problems you two had with that interview. I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been for you both. I’m sure she’s very happy that you were her first instead of someone who may not have been so nice about the whole thing. I’m sure that end product will be great too and am looking forward to hearing that one.
Thanks for the mentions Barry and all your oh so kind words. You know I continue to be touched beyond words.
Enjoy your afternoon and have a great weekend. I’ll see you soon.

Hi Adrienne,
Just got to Barry’s post, it’s been a hell of week! I was laughing the whole time reading it, as all my great expertise in interviewing someone was exposed
That’s a great post Barry, for your readers, so they can make sure not to make all the mistakes I made.
You bet, Adrienne, that I was glad that it was someone nice like Barry I interviewed FIRST. As a matter of fact, I had asked “some kind” of a guru person before and thank God she refused! I was a bit sad at first, but so happy later on, because I am sure that she would have been very annoyed, and I would have felt 10 times worse than her saying no to me
As they say, there is a reason for everything.
Also, interviewing Barry 3 times made me know him better and I enjoyed chatting with him even at the wee hours here in the US to be afternoon in the UK.
Barry, I was trying to rush the videos for you to put the link here, but as you mentioned to your readers, you can add them later. Hopefully by the end of this week end we should have something ready

Hi Barry,
Well, you’ll be having the paparazzi & reporters from Forbes magazine at your door next if this continues.
I listened to the one Jean had done with you and one with Nikki’s as well, both great.
Sylviane had some hiccups with the equipment and am glad all was smoothed out and look forward to reading/listing to the results.
Now, what promise did you give Santa to get a PC for Christmas? Only good boys get big presents like that.

Hi Barry
As you know I’ve listened to your interview with Adrienne and it was fab, you are a natural matey and you must be getting a dab hand at them now…
Yes sometimes things can go wrong and its a shame but I hope that doesn’t put anyone off doing them because it is the easiest way to get a product of your own out there.
What I learnt from doing my interview was it doesn’t matter if you mess up and say the wrong thing because no one knows what was supposed to be said anyway…
And if you do get flustered or something goes wrong it can be edited out quite easily so there’s no worries there either.
I put off doing mine for sooooooooo long because I was scared but now I’ve done it I kind of think what was all the fuss about (lol)
Anyway thank you for the shout out Barry and I look forward to more interviews from you in the future.
Take care matey

I used to use Pamela too, but now use Audacity for recording.
Great stuff Barry, can’t wait to see the product.

Hi Barry,
you are really going places now, mate. Every time I visit your blog I find something new and interesting.
Conducting an interview must take a lot of preparation, like, ‘are there enough questions’, or ‘ are all these questions relevant’ or ‘ does it go on too long, or not long enough.
I admire you for going there, and once again you inspire the rest of us,
Barry

I’ve just gone and had a listen to your interview with Jean Shaw, really good job mate, enjoyed it a lot.
I haven’t interviewed anyone yet, but have been using Audacity for doing my audio…and have heard form a lot of people I’ve been talking to, that it works great for interviews.
All the best Barry – you’re really on a role now

Well Hello Barry
Sounds like you have perseverance well and truly licked, having to repeat an interview 3 times…your a stronger man than me.
If you are nervous about doing your first interview then test your system on yourself…start up Pamela or whatever audio recording option you go for…use skype to call your cell phone, answer your cell phone well away from your computer (avoids feedback howl) speak for a little bit…return to your computer and talk to your cell phone via skype…did you manage to record both sides of the conversation?
Great now go and grab your first interview now you know you can record an interview!
Having done my first interview, I would recommend that you have a main theme for your chat with questions related to this, ie how to attract traffic to a blog. You can then focus on this main theme rather than the exact questions which allows your interviewee to relax and spill the beans whilst you gently keep them on track.

Actually the first miss was due to me not having put the mic close enough to the speakers. The second as Barry mentioned was due to his computer failing. The third went great on both sides, but when I tried to save someone went wrong at that moment and the recording was gone. As far as I know it wasn’t my fault… something just went wrong. Saved videos many, many times before.
However, there wasn’t nervousness or anything like that. Barry is very cool and having been a theater actress, I don’t get nervous for an interview anymore
too old for that!

Hi Barry,
I have only used Skype twice, and one time for a conference call. It worked great, but I have never thought about using it to create a product. That’s a great idea.
I’m not sure how much work it is, but I believe that interviewing experts are one of the most powerful ways to create products that really sell. We are all looking to learn from the best, no matter what niche we’re talking about. So, if you get an expert to talk, I’m sure that would be an awesome product.

Well planned and tested, Barry! It’s always best to be prepared, as the Boy Scouts say (although I’m not sure that term is politically correct anymore!). I know how hard you work at your internet business, Barry, and am pleased you got something positive at the end of this process. Looking forward to seeing the end result!
Enjoy the journey.

Hi Barry
Finally managed to make it over here mate, sorry it’s taken me so. Since returning from vacation I have been swamped with various things I had to catch up on.
Glad to hear that your new PC is working wonders for you, Santa obviously realised you were a good boy after all!
I can relate to things going wrong during an Interview mate, when I interviewed Peggy Baron the connection on Skype kept fading in and out intermittently over a few minutes. When repaying the recording it played havoc with the volumes and editing!
Plus always remember never to have your “Headset” Microphone to near your mouth the recording will pick up your breathing! ~ Yes you guessed it that’s exactly what happened to me; again havoc with the recording and a lot of editing.
As it was my first interview I learnt a lot from it and will be more prepared for the next one.
I know you have been really busy as well mate on your new Product; I looking forward to launch day mate
And I am equally looking forward to the Interview with Adrienne.
I will be catching up with your other recent posts over the next few days Barry and hopefully we’ll catch up on Skype real soon …
Take care mate

You are one lucky guy to have all these interviews done, whether you use them or not! It is always good to test drive your software before you use it to be sure. I used to do cold calling through Skype (which I hated with a major passion) and had some software recorder and think I have it on my PC now – should test it out some time.
Never heard of using Camtasia as a recording device on Skype – would tend to stick with something more reliable.
Anyway – I am anxious to see your new product and actually have a few questions that I will ask you personally
I wish you all the best and see your launch date is fast approaching – I am right here with you!!

Hi Barry,
It’s my first time visiting your blog today! I see I’m in great company here just perusing your comments section and knowing that you’re connected to the illustrious Adrienne Smith (one of my personal faves in the online world)! I actually found your blog by way of another fantastic blogger, Sylviane Nuccio, who I just recently became connected with.
I love the insights you’ve shared about using interviews recorded on Skype! I haven’t tried this yet, but it does look like a fun and relatively simple way to get some quality content for posting up to blogs or to create a product, as you suggested.
Thanks for sharing your experience with Pamela and introducing some other ways to capture an interview over Skype!
Great to meet you!

Hi Barry,
I’ve just finished listening to your interview with Jean Shaw, it was really good. I use Audacity all the time to record my stuff, but I never used it to record conversations over Skype. I guess as other people were commenting here it should be working fine. I really prefer this software over many others.

Will you give it a try to record Skype chats now? It’s the easiest way to start creating products.
