I Interviewed Adrienne Smith and Asked Her…
Regular readers will know that back in January I wrote the post: Conducting An Interview Over Skype To Create A Product and pointed out that it was one of the easiest ways of product creation I have come across. If you haven’t read that post then head over as I share everything I done in preparation for conducting an interview over Skype.
At the time of writing the post I had already interviewed my favourite blogger Adrienne Smith but with so much going on I put the recorded interview to one side while I got on with launching my latest product: From Passion To Products
I then spent time promoting, hosting and taking part in The Video Blog Challenge, following up last week with the Challenge Summary and Traffic Competition Prize Winner Announcement.
So as you can see I’ve been fairly busy since conducting the interview but during the challenge I got to work on the interview and got it ready for to share with you all
Here are some of the questions I asked Adrienne:
- You’ve been working online for some time now. Can you tell the listeners what made you decide to start an online business?
- How soon after coming online did you actually start blogging?
- What started your blogging and ignited your passion?
- How long were you blogging before you started seeing some success from it?
- Were there any contributing factors that you implemented to bring about that success?
- Could you tell us all how you manage your time to be able to reply and return comments so efficiently and still have the time to find great content?
- What are the most common mistakes you see bloggers make and what would you recommend they do to correct those mistakes?
- What advice would you give someone that is just starting out online?
For the rest of my questions and Adrienne’s replies you can

I’m always happy that others want to learn from me so I hope anything that I can share will move them in the right direction.
Will look forward to hearing what others think of this so I’ll be back around.

It is easy with the right equipment, it all comes down to being confident enough to try new things again doesn’t it.
I’m really hoping that people tell their friends about it and get over to your free training because I really do wish that was available when i first started my online quest, it would have saved me so many headaches.
Thanks again Adrienne

Barry – I am listening to it right now and I got tears in my eyes. I am a very emotional person, but they are not tears of sadness, but tears of joy! I am so happy this has finally come out and I believe that many people will take a lot away from this and hopefully they can relate or find a way to move their business forward.
I’ve never done any sort of interview, but I might actually want to now (last year I believe I said no or probably not), but I have been breaking out of my phone fear and if I found the right person I think I would like to try an interview some time down the road.
Good job to the both of you

I’m also really pleased to finally release the interview. It’s been sat to one side while I completed other projects and the challenge. I knew I had to get onto it ASAP so during the challenge I made it my mission to have it all ready for this week.
I’m sure that people will be able to take a lot from the interview to help them move forward as long as they apply what they learn
I didn’t know you had a phone fear Linda, the only way to beat that is to face it head on and kick it into touch.
If you’re considering conducting an interview then look out for product launches and the bonuses that people offer as some offer a free hour consultation and you could use that for your interview, as long as it’s someone that impresses you
Thanks Linda, have a great weekend.

Yes, I have a huge phone fear – really bad…but my last call on Skype went really well, so as long as there is not a long gap in between the next call I should be ok

Great interview, I love to hear success stories and learn how people got there. I especially appreciated the year and half you spent working for results, Adrienne – that’s one thing so many people don’t see, they just figure a great blog is born and if they aren’t seeing comments and stacks of interaction they quit. Persistence!! And of course good content and insight, which both of you share. Thanks for an enjoyable interview!

Hi Barry, You have interviewed one of my favorite bloggers – Adrienne! I believe in the same concept as she does about commenting. I strongly believe that’s how I noticed Adrienne. She would come on my blog, actually read it, and give a great comment and go the extra mile. I am sure my followers have opted into hers because of the helpful information she always shares.
I go to Adrienne’s blog a lot because she is not only a seasoned blogger, that offers good content, but is very candid about it.
Like when she said in the interview: Don’t mind my dogs barking. That makes her a Real Person in my eyes.
I had the opportunity to talk to her on the phone just a few weeks ago because she had contacted me just to go that extra mile again to see what I was up to.
I so enjoyed chatting with her and celebrating her success. That’s what happens on the internet sometimes. We resonate with a person, and route each other on!

You are too kind Donna, I’m really blushing over here. I really appreciate that and that really means a lot.
I don’t know, I kind of thought everyone took their time to read blog posts and leave their thoughts which is why when I started this I didn’t really look at it as any big deal. I was just one other person who also shared my thoughts on what the blogger had written. See, that just tells you what I know.
That’s what I love about what I’ve been doing, it’s just one big learning process. I still have lots to learn too.
I’m glad we had a chance to speak on the phone, I love getting to know people I am in contact with online. It was very enjoyable Donna and you are one very special lady.

Hi Barry,
This was so wonderful!
Adrienne is also my favourite blogger and the person who I feel I’ve learned most from since this past Summer since I met her.
I resonated with what Adrienne said about making a slow start in blog commenting, feeling a little intimidated initially about interacting with other bloggers. I know for certain that one of the reasons I began commenting so enthusiastically was due to how I saw Adrienne doing it, encouraging her readers to comment and engaging with them with such an open heart and big smile.
Just hearing the level of care Adrienne takes in terms of how and when she shares her Tweets of other people’s content speaks volumes to the professionalism and love in her heart for what she does!
This was so fantastic and wonderful to hear, Barry. Adrienne’s advice for new bloggers to start with purpose and a point in the right direction to be able to create a viable online strategy is so key. I know that I’m one who could’ve benefited from that very advice when I first started.
Thanks for sharing more about this wonderful person we all have grown to respect and love so much, Adrienne is a class act!

Hey Barry,
No worries about the commenting approval thing. I have the same issue on some other sites too. It’s bizarre because sometimes I get right through and on others I’m always pending moderation. I’m a CLP user and I never SPAM-vertise people, but for some reason I think GASP picks me up sometimes and tosses me into the wrong queue.
And yes, we most certainly DO have good taste!
I did see Adrienne’s latest guest blog with Annie Andre. I was also very impressed with the video that she cut, showing us how all those techniques look when done right. I was really happy that some of the things are techniques I actually do (but I didn’t know what they were called). Now that I have a better understanding I plan to incorporate more of those stylings into my own videos to make them more effective. My YouTube Channel is still pretty light in the videos department, but I’ve been adding to them and know that in one year’s time it’s going to be a different story! (Actually, I’m putting together a series of 11-12 videos right now for some training that I’ve designed to teach people some of the best listbuilding strategies that have yielded the greatest results for me. Still deciding on how I am going to get this product out there…guess I’ll be testing for a little while!!)
Hope you’re having an amazing and bright day, Barry!

GASP is a fantastic plugin that really does save us a lot of time checking out suspect comments from the spam bots. I know I used to spend far to long on that before I got Commentluv Premium.
You’re right Cat we do all have to start somewhere with our videos and improve them as learn new methods and techniques, especially like those Annie shared with everyone although I don’t think Camtasia can do all of those Annie demonstrated

I will absolutely keep you up to date on my new projects! And thanks for offering to help support! I would certainly like to be able to share my initial drafts with some trusted and well-versed friends like you to get some honest feedback! Thanks so much for that!
I am also always willing to reciprocate in the same fashion! And who knows, maybe we might find an opportunity for some creative synergy!
I hope you’re enjoying this weekend as much as I am, Barry. Now I’m off to go play in the SUN!!

What a shame that it was only the one comment that went straight through
Annie uses Sony Vegas Pro for her editing so I may have to look into that as i too have a way to go with my learning exactly what can be done with Camtasia. Likewise I can add call outs and cuts but this week I’m going to try and get in the mix with it a bit more
I’ve visited the link you gave me Cat and it takes me to a page on your blog, is that where you’re going to be adding your videos?
I look forward to seeing the results of your projects, I have a feeling they’re going to be really good
I had quite a good weekend thanks but unfortunately without the sun shine, rain rain and more rain
Catch up soon Cat
Have a great week,

Ahh I really wish I knew how to get myself off that list that is being suppressed in GASP! lol
I’m not sure why my link didn’t work, Barry. It’s actually a redirect I set to go here http://www.youtube.com/askcatalexandra
It should’ve just taken you there, but thanks for letting me know it didn’t because I’ll look into it.
That Sony Vegas did sound really sweet. I’m tempted to look into it, but just starting to get my arms around Camtasia, so I might wait til it bores me. lol
Hope you did get some sun and that you had fun out and about!!
Chat soon,

It’s a mystery isn’t it Cat…. I wish GASP would GRASP that you’re a freind and welcome to comment as and when you desire
Thanks for the link to your YouTube channel, I’ve been over and subscribed.
I may look into Sony Vegas, but like you said Camtasia does loads and I’m still exploring it so it’s an if but and maybe at the moment
It’s been raining on and off here for a week now and I don’t go far in the rain as I ride an open top scooter trike.
Cheers Cat, take care.

Hello Barry.
Great interview. It’s not hard to see why Adrienne has such a good following. You can hear in her voice and read in her words that she loves what she does.
Always a pleasure to visit both of your blogs.

Glad you liked the interview
It is easy to see why Adrienne has such a great following isn’t it, her passion is clearly there for everyone to see and the help, advice and encouragement she freely offers is outstanding. The Lady has time for everyone and still achieves more than most.
Thanks Steve, catch up soon mate.

Thank you for doing this Barry. I am a huge fan of Adrienne and always pass her message on to other bloggers I know. This interview really made me think about how I format my own priorities and that most times I end up making excuses in the process instead of just doing it.
I loved the ideas and hearing that she went through the same things too to get where she is now. She is so deserving and she always gives back. Adrienne…priceless information and I have to pass this around!

Hi Sonia,
Yes Adrienne is a great example to us all, isn’t she. Like you I always share her content because I know that it’s going to help lots of people, just as it does me.
I’m surprised to hear you say about making excuses Sonia. I’ve always thought that you got a lot done, every time I come to your blog you have fresh, quality, content. Mind you I think there are lots of us that make excuses from time to time so I’m really pleased the interview helped you with that
Its always nice to hear that we aren’t the only ones that struggled when we started out. I too was pleased when Adrienne said about the learning curve and time it took….. I was kind of like “phew there’s hope for me yet then”
Thanks for the sharing Sonia, I really appreciate it.
Have a great weekend

Great job on the interview Barry. The audio quality is really impressive. You need to get into podcasting! Were you guys on Skype? I’ve enjoyed learning from Adrienne and she deserves all the awards especially when it comes to engagement. Thanks for letting us listen in on your chat.

Hi Ileane,
Thanks for the compliments, I reall appreciate them thanks.
I’ve not even thought of podcasting to be honest Ileane, I’ll have to get clued up on it
Yes the interview was held over Skype, thankfully it didn’t fade in and out as some do that are long distance
Adrienne really does deserve the awards she has won, especially the engagement. Even knowing how she does it it’s extremely hard to match the way she applies herself to her blogging.
Thanks Ileane, I’m glad you liked the interview.
Catch up soon, take care.

Thank you Ileane, glad you enjoyed the interview. Barry did a great job so now he needs to get in touch with you about the podcasting. You’re definitely the pro in that area now.
Thanks again..

Just got round to listening to this, Barry and Adrienne. There are some gems of info in there. I was particularly interested to hear that you did not believe that anyone would want to read comments you left, Adrienne. I had never recognised that some people might think like this and therefore not leave a comment. Something for us all to bear in mind. ANd just wanted to say your exchange with Cat above, Barry, is funny from a visual point of view, the boxes get smaller and smaller til there’s only one word on a sentence. Made me laugh!
Enjoy the journey.

I was also surprised to hear that Adrienne thought people wouldn’t want to read her comments but have since heard that someone else as well, which is why I encourage people to comment regardless of who, what or where…
Yes Cat and did have a bit of a session didn’t we…. I had to keep extending the reply thread to keep up
Thanks Mandy, take care.

Hey Mandy,
Glad you got around to listening to this and were actually surprised by a few things I had to say. Yeah, I really didn’t think anyone cared what I had to say and since they didn’t actually ask me to comment, I just didn’t. That in itself was a big lesson for me once I started diving into it which is why I try to ask questions in my post and as for people’s opinions. Because of my own experience, I know there are others that would think the same thing.
I also got a good chuckle at how Barry’s commenting boxes are set up and they got smaller and smaller. Cat and I can definitely chat so I loved seeing that between those two.
Thanks Mandy and enjoy what’s left of your day!

Glad you stopped by and listened to my interview. I appreciate that. Glad you’re always learning from me, that means a lot.
Yeah, I definitely was an executive assistant for over 31 years. Worked with the top dogs too. You know, I was the one that ran the office. I’m annoyingly organized too.
Thanks so much and always a pleasure to see you!

Commenting is not about just appreciating, it’s about being faithful on what you read. Adrienne says “Be yourself” always. That’s what I see on her always. She admit when she don’t know and help others. We learn something everyday.
I agree that Bloggers just don’t get that how to manage time as she said. 5 blogs per day to comment. Simple, but do we? Nice tips about scheduling, engaging with followers. But she was wrong at there. She don’t have a family? She has an adorable daughter – Kayla
Thanks for this interview Barry
Also I like your interview line up…
Good luck to both of you, my favorites.
Cheers…

Hi Mayura,
ahhh thank for the compliments
I’ve not heard that term before but its true we should be faithful on what we learn from the posts we read.
I agree that we do learn something everyday, or at least we should try to
Adrienne’s posts always deliver great content and she always goes the extra mile to help her readers.
I do aim to comment on 5 blogs a day, sometimes more if I have the time, but there have been times when I’ve not managed it
ha ha I’ll let Adrienne reply to the adorable daughter part Mayura
Glad you liked the interview and hope that you get a lot from it my friend
Take care, Barry

I knew after I got acquainted with Adrienne that there was a “link.”
It is like history in repeat! I’ve almost decided that a lot of Bloggers like me (and Adrienne) go through a hazing that is required before the Blogging Light starts shinning through.
I couldn’t believe it when she said she would visit sites and not leave a comment…I’ve done that forever, but as I commented elsewhere, my 2013 challenge to myself is: If I read, I must pay with a comment.
Think it was on Dan Sumner’s Blog, right there among all those well know names! that I started my journey.
For my persistence I have been repaid, Adrienne left a comment for me that says it all, real Bloggers help each other!
Think it is best described by the track back Dan left on my blog after I was lucky enough to get listed in his Christmas “Blog Reader Love and Link Sharing” and Presto I had a Trackback on the post he had chosen.
Wish I was a Techie like Adrienne, she is so very smart. Some things I can do, but at others a dismal procrastinating failure…note I know some of the problem….just haven’t worked out my solution yet.
Hmmm….wonder if I could do an interview with Barry and Adrienne together! Now that would be a treat! Will have to wait until I get a new computer, Skype doesn’t like my Dell XP!
Thanks so much for the share, Barry. I downloaded the pdf so I could make some of those twitter adjustments…which takes planning and commitment!

Well hey there Cararta, great to see you.
Oh girl, it took me forever it seems to really start getting anywhere with blogging.
See, I’m not the only one that didn’t leave comments because I wasn’t asked to. I didn’t think they cared to hear what I had to say so that just goes back to the old saying that you need to tell them what you want them to do. We aren’t mind readers and when you’re new you really don’t have any clue.
Persistence and consistency is the real key here and it will pick up over time. I’m living proof that it will. It’s almost a year after this interview and I’m still going strong.
I was not techie Cararta and I still don’t consider myself that way but boy have I learned a lot. I do have a free training site that might help if you need more help with some sites.
Thank you for visiting and listening to my interview. Great to have you and you enjoy your weekend.

Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for stepping in there and replying to Cararta.
It seems that many of us start the same way so it’s great that we’re able to help each other through those difficult areas that we don’t quite get when we first start online.
It’s good to see that people are still getting the full benefit of our interview Adrienne
Hoping to be back soon and will catch up properly when i am.
Thanks Adrienne,
Barry
Hi Cararta,
Most of us are the same way Cararta, we start blogging in the dark and it’s not until later that the light comes on.
I think it all starts with getting in the mix and getting to know people through commenting. I can understand your challenge to yourself, the way I see it is: If I enjoyed the post or can add to it in any way or encourage the blogger I will do so.
It’s great that Dan gave you a trackback and showed you some link love and respect, which started with your commenting on his blog…
What kind of “Techie” stuff would you like to learn Cararta? Procrastination can be a dream killer so let me know what it is that’s causing it and I’ll see if I can find a solution for you, and in video if need be… As you rightly said in your comment Real Bloggers help each other
I’ll be up for an interview with you Cararta when you get your new PC let us know and I’ll see what can be done
You’re more than welcome to the PDF, there’s an audio link within it. Twitter does take time to master but is well worth the effort. I’ll be updating my Twitter guide once I’m back to work properly. I’ll keep you posted on that
Take care Cararta,
Barry
