Learning Some Basic HTML Can Help Improve Your Articles

If you’ve been working online for any length of time you’ll know the benefits of submitting articles to the Article Directories:
Free Traffic
Boost Your Credibility
Build Your Brand
Increase Your Sales
Reach New Audiences
Get Yourself Recognised As An Expert
To name but a few…
Obviously the better the articles the better the results you’ll get from them and a little HTML in the right places can make your articles stand out from the crowd and get other people promoting your work.
Now you don’t have to be an HTML guru to get to grips with this, believe me, it’s easy to grasp and even easier to apply, as long as you know how that is…..and that’s where this post comes in
Please Note: Whilst I’ll give examples of underlining text, it is not advisable to use it in your articles as people tend to think that underlined text is a hyperlink and with some words underlining them will make them difficult to read, for example blogging is difficult to read when underlined. But of course the use of underlined text is your choice.
OK let’s get started:
By typing <b>your text will become bold until you enter</b> as the addition of the forward slash ends the instruction.
If you swap the <b> for an <i>your text will become Italic, again until you enter</i> to end that instruction.
If you really want to underline a sentence then type in <u>and the text will be underlined until it finds</u> the end instruction, you knew that was coming didn’t you
You can also combine these instructions in any way you choose but you must enter and end each instruction individually.
For Example:
<b><i><u>makes the text bold, italic and underlined</u> ends underlined but italic and bold continue until you end each</i> one of them</b> and continue with normal text.
Now let’s step up a gear and really make your articles stand out:
Creating Lists within your articles:
Your article may be a 5 step “How To” guide and you want to display each step as best as you can….easy!
A Numbered list is known as an Ordered List and uses <ol> to start and </ol> to end it, with additional list item instructions entered, <li> and </li>.
For Example:
<ol>
<li>Step 1:</li> Followed by details for each step
<li>Step 2:</li>
<li>Step 3:</li>
<li>Step 4:</li>
<li>Step 5:</li>
</ol> to close the list.
The example above will produce:
- Step 1: Followed by details for each step
- Step 2:
- Step 3:
- Step 4:
- Step 5:
A Bullet pointed list is known as an Un Ordered List and uses <ul> to start and </ul> to end it, again with the additional list item instructions entered, <li> and </li>.
For Example:
<ul>
<li>Bullet Point 1:</li>
<li>Bullet Point 2:</li>
<li>Bullet Point 3:</li>
<li>Bullet Point 4:</li>
<li>Bullet Point 5:</li>
</ul> to close list.
The example above will produce:
- Bullet Point 1:
- Bullet Point 2:
- Bullet Point 3:
- Bullet Point 4:
- Bullet Point 5:
Obviously you wouldn’t use the terms Step 1 or Bullet Point 1 and would make the text keyword rich. You could also make them bold so as to stand out for both easy reading and SEO purposes. Again we do this as we did above, as the examples below demonstrate:
Ordered List <ol>:
<ol>
<li><b>Keyword Rich Title:</b></li> and continue to describe each step as normal
<li><b>Keyword Rich Title:</b></li> as above
</ol>
Which will then produce:
- Keyword Rich Title: and continue to describe each step as normal
- Keyword Rich Title: as above
Un Ordered List <ul>:
<ul>
<li><b>Keyword Rich Title:</b></li> Details of….
<li><b>Keyword Rich Title:</b></li> Details of….
</ul>
Which will then produce:
- Keyword Rich Title: Details of….
- Keyword Rich Title: Details of….
I’m sure that you’ll agree that a little HTML can improve the look of any plain text article and help get your work the results you desire and deserve.

I hope that you have found this post useful, if so please hit the Tweet Button and leave a comment below……… and if you have any other Html Tips that you could pass onto my readers please feel free to do so, but remember that if you enter any instructions within < and > it will insert the instruction on your comment, rather than display it, so to eliminate that please use ( and ) with the instructions within, thanks.

Hey Barry,
Great to see posts like this, very educational for people struggling in this area of their online marketing ventures, heres one for the pot for all your peeps out there…
I any of you guys want to incorparate an affiliate link or your own product link into a graphic here’s the html code, put it on your swipe file…
(a href=”AFFILIATE LINK HERE”)(/a)
So add your chosen link to the *AFFILIATE LINK HERE* section, then upload your graphic to what ever directory you want within your hosting account, then copy and paste that image path URL into the *IMAGE URL HERE* section of the code, also put the actual size specs for width and height, and BAM your graphic is not a ‘clickable one’!
Great post Barry as usual….Ed.
OOPS the html didn’t show up in the comment sorry about that!
Ed.
Hi Ed, glad you liked the post mate.
I managed to recover your HTML code Ed and swapped for () so as to display it however there’s some missing. You said about adding the image URL to the *Image URL here* in the code but that part of the code is missing.
If you pop back could you put the code within ( and ) instead of < then it will display correctly.
Thanks mate, catch up very soon
R&R Barry
Hi Barry,
Knowing a little html can really make your articles shine. One can do a search and come up with some pretty good information about simple html.
The more you know the more you can do, not only with articles but with any web pages as well.
Trying to get to know html can look like a horror movie but if you apply your self just a bit you will come to know it’s not as bad as it looks.
Learning just a little can go a long way to helping you optimize all your web pages if need be.

Hi Terry,
I agree that the more HTML you know the more you can do with it, but when it comes to webpages Terry most HTML editing programs have tools in place to eliminate the need of mastering HTML. They all have shortcut buttons for entering bold, italic, underlined, Header tags, keywords, hyperlinks etc, although it is wise to get to grips with the basics all the same.
Article Directories, however, are quite different as most of them will only accept articles if they are in plain text and will only allow basic HTML within the articles.
Catch up soon mate,

Another great informative and well explained post Barry. I do use a little html but mainly the simple ones bold, italics etc.
Some of the more advanced stuff seems like hieroglyphics to me but as you know I am not the sharpest chisel in the box when it comes to computer technology.

Hi Bill,
I’m glad you liked the post. Not the sharpest chisel in the box
I like the expression Bill.
Here’s a tip for you Bill, open a notepad doc’ and copy my examples to it then save it as Basic HTML Tips and place it in your article folder for future reference. Then when you’re writing articles in the future open it up as a fresher and simply copy and paste the instructions into the appropriate areas of your articles.
Best of luck to you Bill

Very useful Barry, thanks for this.
I have Xsite pro software which you can switch between code and WYSIWYG view. I then try and work out the HTML codes. The one I’m not sure of is how to make text bigger? I think it’s something like , but I’m not sure?
Any ideas, or maybe another post?

Hi John,
Glad you enjoyed the post. That’s a good idea for learning the code John, why didn’t i think of that
The code for text increasing is as follows John:
Enter (font size=”4″) To go up in size to 14 and again end with (/font). To increase again (font size=”5″) with size 5 being 18, again end with (/font) or the text will carry on at the last size instructed. For size 10 font enter “2″.
Swapping symbols () for <
Note: I tried to insert the code here as an example and WP wouldn’t allow size increase for text. I have tried the above code in my HTML editor and it worked. Just don’t forget to swap the symblos () for <
Cheers John, Barry

Hi Barry,
I think you have to use to tags to get it to show in WordPress comments. And the “font size =” is a quick work around. Good form would be “font style =”
You also have three other ways of defining size:
font size = 15px
font size = 120%
font size = x large

Hi Barry,
I actually wrote, that I thought you had to use the “h” tags in my above comments. That didn’t come through either. Guess I was wrong.
Let’s see if the “scroll box code” works.
(!– HTML Codes by Quackit.com –)
As you can see, once there’s enough text in this box, the box will grow scroll bars… that’s why we call it a scroll box! You could also place an image into the scroll box.
(a href=”http://www.quackit.com/html/codes/html_scroll_box.cfm”)HTML scrollbox(/a)

Hi Barry,
Nice layout, this for sure will help out the newcomers looking to find out even more on this.
Some article directories don’t have the wysiwyg editor, or the likes of squidoo and what have you, so anyone that’s still behind a bit on their HTML, could certainly bookmark this page and come back to it now and again when they need it for the likes of these sites to spice it up a bit.
I learned html startng out and I can tell you it comes in very useful now and agian.
Well layed out Barry. I know a lot of people will get a lot of use out of this.

Hi Eamon,
I’m glad you mentioned the layout as the first draft looked a mess so i re-wrote it to make it easier to follow, so i appreciate your commenting on it, Thanks.
With the Article Directories using different formats (plain text and wysiwyg) I found it frustrating when submitting articles. So now i write them all for plain text and enter my HTML once i have the article written. It’s then just a case of copying and pasting the articles into the submission areas.
Thanks for your comment and feedback Eamon, much appreciated mate.

Hi Barry
Great point, learning some basic HTML would go a long way to helping in doing stuff all round.
Its trying to find a simple step by step guide on how to do html, you see stuff and it gives a few steps etc.
I am trying to learn stuff all the time but sometimes it takes a lot of trying before it sinks in and sticks
Those few steps you have provided are a great start and useable right away.
Thanks
Also just a reminder Fran Aslam’s Guest Article is live on my site now.
Thanks

Hi Zahid,
I’m pleased that you found the post useful. If you want to copy and paste the examples to your PC feel free to do so my friend. I would save them to a notepad doc’ in your article folder for future use and as you learn more add it to the doc’ and save. That way you’ll build your very own HTML manual
I’ll try and get over to Fran’s post soon but I am still having to spend most of my time with my mum.

Your problem with such instruction that you provide is that you try to transpose font size=”5″ for more complex work beyond just articles.
You really need to learn how to do all of the above with CSS instead of HTML.
My problem is that I continue to do it as you have provided in your instruction as this is how I learned also. I have to re-write about half of my code over again. If I would just do it in CSS instead of HTML, I’d be fine.

Onto your comment:
Is that for article writing or websites?
I haven’t written and CSS codes although i have checked them out from time to time, (when problems arise).
It is a good idea to know both, as you said Jeffrey, it can save you having to do things twice, as i did with my Ease The Squeeze page
Thanks Jeffrey,

I’m going to try this, however this may wind-up on the dark side of the moon, hence my second comment.
Here is the same thing in CSS.
p { font-size: 120%; }
ol{ font-size: 10px; }
ul{ font-size: x-large; }

Hey Barry
I used to hate html and I kinda learned it as I went along online, basically just viewing the source of peoples pages and copying what they did.
But yep I agree 100% learning at least basic html is a must do.
I went from using a free html editor to now comfortably using Dreamweaver (which I love) so I dont have any problems with most coding, installing scripts etc, in saying that, I dont do it all myself now, I do know when to outsource lol.
But for article marketers the tips are excellent, Sally

I also tried a couple of free HTML editors but found they either lacked something or were difficult to get around so I had MS Frontpage installed which is really easy to work with.

Barry,
I love HTML which doesn’t mean that I am good at it. I have gotten to where I can read a lot of it but always have to look up the code when I go to write it.
The one thing I would offer is for the really simple things like “center” or “font size” you just put the same thing on either end.
So if I want to center something I would put (center) then the rest of the text and at the end another (/center). Just notice that the ending “center” has a “/” before it. The text in between the two centers would be centered.
There are quite a few commands that you can use like this and they are easy.
It really does improve blog posts and most any text to use HTML.

Hi Barry
To be honest, I’m pretty awful at html stuff. I can do a few basics, like etc., but when I need to be tricky I have to go look it up.
I was recently trying to put a graphic unto a WP text box, and all the logic didn’t work.
I found a brilliant site which I’ve bookmarked that always gives me the specific solution. If you allow links in comments, it’s http://www.tizag.com/
Simply select what you want from the menu, and Bob’s your aunties husband!
Hope it helps – helped me.
Cheers

I only know the basics of HTML Alan and for the rest I have notepad docs of examples that i use. One for Images, one for Anchored text etc etc
Thank you for sharing the link Alan, I’ll be sure to check it out.
How did you know my aunties husband is called Bob?
I’ll be over to your blog very soon Alan, You’ve covered a great topic that I would like to know more about.

Hey Barry,
What a fantastic post, I knew you where allowed to use html in your articles…
BUT…
I’ve never really delved into it too much, yet for some reason, I always use html a lot in my blogposts, go figure, but I know all the tips you provide on this post will without a doubt help anyone engross their readers more by using this formatting in their articles..
I know I will, cheers for that and I hope your well….Ed.
Hi Ed, Glad you found the post helpful.
A little HTML within our articles helps people read them and draw their attention to certain areas, but by using HTML to create lists within our artiles not only does it make them look better but we have a greater chance of others publishing our work and as you know Ed, when that happens our Bio’s go with them.

I saw your info on Twitter
high Value ! I have book for all this stuff at home…580 pages
.. css,html,JavaScript,DHTML,ASP,PHP,ASP.net…. it’s everything in there… but it’s to much everything. When we get some info like this (for me) I think is faster and better sometimes to learn and then keep everything in our heads
regards
Alex
Hi Alex, that just goes to show that Twitter works…
It’s good that you have a book on all the coding aspects for your websites. I’d make little tabs for the areas of the book that you’ll use so as to find them quickly when they’re needed. Otherwise it’s just going to gather dust my friend.
Yes you can learn from snipets of info, like this post, but rather than trying to keep it all in your head Alex I’d make use of Notepad and save all the good info as a swipe file for future use.

Barry,
that is good Idea about Notepad. I must do this in future. It’s really good when we have this on one place and we can just snipe it.
About book and all Codes. Hmmm… I’m always working on it. And funny, I know exactly where can I found something in book. But I don’t know, somehow is better and nice to use Video, because I can see some details which I can drop if I work alone.
O.k….now I’ll open Notepad and start with saving in there. New Revolution in my PC

Hi Alex, by using a notepad doc for the html coding you use regularly it’ll save you time as you’ll be able to copy and paste it where needed.
By doing that you also come to learn the code and will find in time that you don’t need to swipe it as you remember it
It works for me Alex
