Hi Barry,
I have been reading a lot of discussions about these changes recently and yours is the best summary of the situation I have seen. There's a lot of anger out there about this but, as you rightly say, no amount of footstamping is likely to change things. I have started offering 2nd Class postage free of charge as my first option with paid-for 1st Class as the second option. As you anticipated, most buyers are opting for 2nd Class rather than pay the extra. I sell mainly CDs by fairly obscure artists, most of which come from charity shops and I will have to be much more selective in future about whether I buy an item or not - previously I could pay a pound for a CD, list it for 99p and not worry if it only sold for that much because the P&P meant that I at least broke even and would know not to buy that CD again. Doing that now will lose me money, which has the unfortunate side-effect that I will effectively be giving less to charity each month. For the last couple of years I have been spending up to around £200 each month in charity shops - they got their money, I took the risk of the item not selling but hopefully made a profit if it did, and somebody without access to that particular shop got an item they wanted. I also have to consider whether I should stop shipping to UK addresses completely - fortunately I do a reasonable chunk of business with foreign buyers but it is still going to hurt. Trading on Ebay is just a sideline for me - it must be much harder for people for whom it is the main source of income.
Best regards
David

<em>Hi David, thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment.
What most sellers are now doing is adding the postal costs to the start price and offering FREE 2nd class postage. Single CD's can go as a large letter within the UK, which costs about 65p. If you normally start your CD's at 99p then i would recommend that you now start around £1.45 - £1.75 with free postal to the UK. Then deduct the 65p (UK Postal price) from the international postal costs and this should help.

Best of luck, Barry

Thanks for the news, Barry.

I've not sold on eBay for some time now, but I will be getting back into it soon. At least I know what to expect when I return now.

I think the real reason for them making this change so they can make more money on seller fees, as they can't take 5% or whatever it is from the postage. So now sellers will be forced to adjust their prices to include the p&p, which they will incur a % fee on.

So I can't say I'm happy about it from a sellers point of view, but I suppose as a regular ebay buyer (which I am) it's not so bad.

Nice blog btw!

Take care,

Paul.

<em>Hi Paul thanks for stopping by.

You're absolutely right eBay will now be charging a % of the postal costs in the Final Value Fees. As will paypal for receiving your payments.

People now need to look into what they're selling on eBay and try to avoid low priced items in the affected categories.
