When Life Has Other Plans For You
When Life Has Other Plans For You
Its been a few months since I last wrote a blog post and I’ll explain why later in the post/update.
Last year was my best year online yet and at Christmas I told my family that this year was going to be even better, little did I know then….
I started the year really well and launched From Passion To Products, a step by step guide showing people how to follow their passions and start creating their own products.
I then held the Video Blog Challenge to encourage people to start creating videos for themselves as well getting experienced video creators to show off their skills and pass their knowledge on to others.
I was blog hopping like crazy to generate interest in the challenge and offered prizes as an incentive for people to take part. The challenge was a success, we had some fantastic tutorials submitted, my traffic increased dramatically and my Alexa Ranking improved to 95K
I then released the Interview with Adrienne Smith, in both audio and eBook, and everything was going smoothly.
WOW what a great start to the year, I was on target to making this one better than last when suddenly life decided to throw a spanner in the works.
I’ve been having an health issue for the past year, which has laid me up from time to time but I’ve been able to manage it. That was until May when “BANG” it hit me hard and fast, leaving me with no choice but to go to bed.
Now my wife, who’s able bodied, had been waiting on an operation to correct her collapsed vertebra’s which meant that once she had the operation she’d be on bed rest and I’d be looking after her for a change, so it was imperative that I got myself sorted before her operation.
I put myself on bed rest and started treating the issue with medication, days turned into weeks and weeks have now turned into months…. I’m now waiting on the hospital to come to my aid and until they do my recovery can’t even begin ARGH!!
My wife has had her operation, which went well, and is now recovering so we’re kind of alternating and getting the household duties completed between us.
Due to my long absence Mandy Allen kindly sent me 2 blog posts and said that I could publish them so as to have some fresh content on my blog. I asked if I could use them as guest posts as I was unable to get to the PC to reply to comments, Mandy agreed and also wrote a post on Guest Posting as well.
Mandy’s posts are:

Sylviane Nuccio got in touch saying how she was impressed by the way people had been reaching out to help me and wrote How Important Is It To You To Build A Blogging Community? Which hit the nail on the head as it is so important to be a part of a community, as my recent issue highlights. You can find Sylviane at Sylviane Nuccio.com where she again shares her wisdom.
Robert Corrigan got in touch and offered his help by way of a guest post and wrote about Amazon and the platforms they offer us smaller businesses: Do You Want An 800lb Gorilla On Your Side? And seeing as how Rob has been making money on Amazon for some time now he’s the man to listen to. You can find Rob on his blog at Robert Corrigan.com
Pat Graham got in touch and sent me a ghost post that she wrote for my blog to keep the content fresh. Don’t Follow Your Passions to Internet Death where Pat share her experiences of choosing the wrong niche and tips for how to choose the right one. Pat’s a ghost writer, who has written ebooks for some big names online so if you’ve ever thought of using a ghost writer give Pat a shout via this link, or visit her blog at Kitchen Blogging.com
Huge Thanks To…
Huge Thanks to everyone mentioned above for reaching out and helping me, writing the guest posts and making time to reply to the comments. I know that you all have things to do with your own lives and work loads and really do appreciate your help, “thank you”.
Huge Thanks to everyone that has sent me emails, tweets and got in touch via Facebook and Google Plus with your messages of get well soon, “thank you”.
Huge Thanks to you, my readers, that have come back time and again to leave comments and share the content via the Social Networks so as to keep my traffic flowing. Even though I haven’t been able to return the visits you’ve kept coming back and I really do appreciate that, “thank you”.
“It’s having friends like you that make these difficult times bearable, thank you.”
I’m still waiting to resolve my health issue but once I have I’ll continue with my plans for this year and pick up where I left off. I’ll also spend some time catching up with you all on your blogs and sharing your content.
The Moral Of The Story Is…
The moral of the story is: You never know what’s around the corner or what hurdles life’s going to throw your way so its hard to make plans for the difficult times. BUT one lesson I’ve learnt is to have a few blog posts in reserve so if/when life throws a spanner in your works at least you’ll have something to fall back on, which is what I’ll be working on as soon as I’m in a position to do so.
Value the connections you make with people online, treat them with the respect they deserve and spend time getting to know them properly. If you see someone needs help or advice and you’re able to assist them, do so.
In the blogging world I feel it’s not about me, it’s about us and looking at the help that other bloggers have given me it’s clear to see that many of us think the same way.
So the next time you visit someone’s blog and read a post that you enjoy be sure to leave them a comment and start getting to know the person behind the post. Just look at where it can lead
I Feel Cheeky Asking…
I feel cheeky asking you to leave a comment as I may not been able to reply to them straight away and as I said above I haven’t been able to return any visits to your blogs. I would however appreciate your comments and will reply to them all as and when I can.
Sharing Is Caring…
I’d really appreciate your help with getting the word out about this post, so please use the tools available to share the post so everyone knows how much I appreciate their input, thanks.
Until next time, plan ahead.

Hey Barry,
It’s so true – you can never plan your life completely as things will always pop up to throw you a curveball – it sounds like you’ve had a lots of those thrown at you recently!
I hope that you & your wife both make a good recovery – I have visions of you tag-teaming it around the house to take it in turns to do the chores.
It’s a testament to the great relationships that you’ve built up online that so many people came forward with content for your blog, well-wishes, and other forms of support.
Fingers crossed for your continual improvement Barry, it’s been quiet without you!
Catch up with you soon,

Hi Nikki,
I’ve only had the one curveball thrown at me but it’s being thrown on a daily basis. It wouldn’t be so bad if the doctors took action and helped get me sorted out, one day soon they will I hope.
Tag team is about right Nikki, my wife can’t bend or lift anything so we’re like a tag team trying to get things done and then lay up again inbetween times. Maybe I could introduce a new paralympic sport
That’s a nice thing to say Nikki, thanks. I have built some fantastic relationships online and it those that have kept me going with a positive outlook.
I’ll be sure to make some noise when i’m back to normal, just to make up for lost time ha ha.
Thanks Nikki, have a great weekend mate

Hi Barry, good to see you back with a post, but your blog really hasn’t missed a beat. You were so open about what was going on in your life and everyone made sure to either make an appearance or send you something to help out. You have left your mark with people and you have always been so kind to me and everyone else.
I am praying for a safe recovery for you both and if you need anything from me, I would be happy to help out! Glad to see this post and friendship is really what it’s all about. Thanks Barry!

It’s taken a while to write the post as I can only sit up for short periods of time before having to go on my side again
It’s thanks to those mentioned in the post that my blog has been getting updated, I dread to think of what may have happened without them.
Thanks Sonia, that’s very kind of you to say so, I think we all help each other as we move around the blogs on our lists sharing tips and info.
You’re always welcome to submit a guest post if you can Sonia, it would be truely appreciated, but only if you have the time free

Hi Barry, it was a pleasure to help out, I’m just glad I noticed you hadn’t updated for a while and emailed those posts to you. It started the ball rolling and everyone else was happy to contribute, I’m sure. Hope you are feeling better now and can get up and about a bit more. Can’t wait til you’re back on track.

Yes it did get the ball rolling Mandy as everyone listed in the post then got in touch with offers of guest posting and helping out. I dread to think what I’d have done without that help.
I’m still having the same episode over and over so I know it’s going to mean surgery I just wish they’d hurry up and see me, because until they do my recovery can’t even begin
Thanks for everything Mandy, you’re a true star of the blogging world.

Hey buddy, it’s strange how things work out in life. It seems that at times bad luck seems to attract more of the same, and there are other times when everything seems to go write no matter what you do.
The good thing is it seems to happen in cycles so I’m hoping you bad luck one is just about up, and you’re due for a positive one here!
Be well buddy!

Hi Barry,
The power of networks is unreal. By reaching out and connecting you open up so many doors. My greatest lesson is this: if you want to succeed quickly make a ton of good friends. Robert Kiyosaki says that rich people build networks and I am inclined to agree with him.
Think of “us” instead of me, or I, and a magical shift occurs. Your intent changes. You seek to help, to serve, to reach out, and this intent is returned to you as increasing numbers of people help out, when you most need it.
Thanks!
RB

Hi Ryan,
I totally agree, reaching out and connecting with people is where any form of success starts, not to mention the help that is offered when we find ourselves struggling as I am right now.
Without applying myself to building good relationships online I dread to think where I’d be now.
There’s a lot to be said for having the “us” mentality rather than the “I” as you said it is returned when we need it
Thanks for coming over Ryan, have a great weekend.

Hey Barry….
Really sorry to hear about ALL the misfortune going on in your life at the moment…I was reading the post thinking CRIKEY…life is an assassin at times…BUT I noticed how you keep a level mindset through it ALL…and that’s important to get through it all and battle on!
You know when you mentioned your early achievements this year told me that once you are back up and raring to go YOU WILL pick up where you left off that was a great start as you say to this year….but don’t worry my friend…with your determination I know you’ll back on target!….later Barry….Ed.
Hi Ed,
hummm that should’ve been the post title: Life is an assassin at times
We have to keep a level mindset Ed and stay focused on the positive and try our best to keep any negative thoughts at bay…. But trust me mate, there’s been a few negative thoughts over the last month or so
I still aim to finish this year having completed my plans, i know that’s a tough challenge but I do thrive on challenges…. Hummm maybe I should challenge the doctor I’m waiting on mate eh!? ha ha
Thanks Ed, I hope that your plans are moving forward as well mate.
Take care,

Hi Barry
I am so sorry for my absence mate in blog hopping these past few months but as you know life has also thrown a couple spanners my way as well!
This year has certainly had its fair share of ups and downs; breaking my hand, having an operation and the recovery has really been slow and painful at times. The support I have had from family and friends has been tremendous, and Evette has been fantastic and very patient with my mood swings!
It’s great to see you back at the helm with a new post Barry and it just goes to show the important of building relationships and friends online by the support you have received; truly marvellous.
Things are getting a lot better for me now and I nearly have full mobility back in my hand and wrist; so hopefully I’ll soon be back with a blog post myself!
Evette and my thoughts are with you and Tracy and I wish for a speedy recovery for you both Barry, please pass on love and best wishes to Tracy and no doubt we’ll catch up real soon.
Take real good care
Ian
Hi Ian,
You don’t need to apologise here mate, I know that life threw you a spanner as well (you jinx you
)
I know that your hand has been giving you trouble mate, just glad that you’re finally getting it sorted. What on earth has happened to the NHS!? What with your hand, Tracey’s back and my current issues I’m really starting to see how they’re turning “somewhat” minor issues into major ones because they’re taking to long to tackle the issues in the first place. As we’ve perviously discussed had they of taken the correct action in a reasonable time we’d all have been dealt with long ago mate
Talk about mood swings Ian, cor mate I reckon Evette and Tracey could write a book on dealing us during them. Mind you Tracey just takes my chair away and says what she likes from down the hall ha ha.
I’m really pleased to hear that you’ve nearly got full mobility back in your hand, its taken them long enough hasn’t it. It’ll be good to see you back in the driving seat as well Ian.
Thanks for the well wishes and please thank Evette for me as well Ian.
Take good care mate and have a great weekend.

PS How’s your eBook coming along?
Twitter: donaldmacleod1
Hi Brian,
My ebook, finished it weeks ago.Been a bit lazy for a few weeks to be honest. I’m halfway doing 2 sales pages and haven’tlooked at any for a while. Been buying some products which I have been studying but that’s about it really. Been doing a lot of hours in my J.O.B. and sometimes when i get home, feel to tired. Must ba an age thing..lol.
But I will get it together. Still in a homeless house, which is good don’t get me wrong. When you’re surrounded by boxes and not knowing when we get permanent accommodation you get a bit hacked off.
Computer also playing up. When watching videos I get the ol, stop, start etc. That puts me off. Apart from that everything is top banana. There are people a lot worse off than I am.
Went to download Camtasia 3 a few weeks ago, meant to be free. I was asked for a licence number. Couldn’t get one, went onto their website to be told they stopped dishing out licences in 2009…lol. Happy days. I have Camstudio. Definately going to try a video, see how I get on. I did one with Jing, no sound, don’t know why….computer probably but I need to stop coughing, clearing throat etc, suppose that goes with experience.
Must go….Scotland playing Serbia. Let’s see if we can get off to a winning start for a change.
Take Care all.

Glad you’ve finished the eBook Donald, congratulations mate.
Please don’t take this the wrong way Donald but i wouldn’t buy anything new unless it’s going to help you finish your projects. Its all to easy to start something and leave it on the side whilst you start on something else. It’s a mistake to do that Donald as you’ll find opening your project with a view to complete it gets harder and harder.
I can understand you getting hacked off with being surrounded by boxes and not knowing how long it’s going to be until you can move. That makes it hard to make any plans Donald never mind stay positive. You’re right Donald, there are people worse of than all of us mate, I often remind people of that myself mate
With the computer not allowing you to watch videos without stop starting over and over, have you tried a different browser? I had the same issue when I used Internet Explorer but switching to FireFox solved that for me.
Sorry to hear that you’re still having trouble with creating videos. Camstudio is a great piece of free software and when used with Windows Live Movie Maker you can edit out the coughs etc. You’re right it does get better with experience but i still have coughs, sneezes and belly rumbles which i edit out in Camtasia but you can do with WLMM
Best of luck Donald,
Barry

Hi Brian,
Definately not buying any more…lol. Stuff I bought can help. As regarding a browser, I’m using FF, and IE not very good either. Going to download Google.I read somewhere that FF is having issues with different programmes and they’re trying to fix the problem. We’ll see what Chrome does and hopefully will make a difference.
Time also to unplug machine, open the innards and give a good clean. Haven’t done that in a long time.
Scotland were pants today…. must improve.
Talk soon mate.

Hey Barry, great write up as always. But I’m sorry to hear about the events that has been unfolding in your life, but I’m 100% positive that you will rise from this stronger and more focused than ever before. You’re a great inspiration as always.
Sometimes in life it takes a spanner in the works to make us realize how precious life is, this year has been a bit of a roller coaster year for me too, relationship wise and health wise. Doc says I need to get more exercise and start watching what I eat. A bit odd that I don’t anything eat at all during the day, I think that’s the problem right there though lol, but I’m getting there.
Anyhow mate, I’ll be making sure that you’re in my prayers, some friends and I are enjoying some surf, sun and an evening BBQ down in Cornwall, so I’ll be sure to tell the Oracle above to keep an eye out on you mate.

I’m like you as well Fabrizio, I only have an evening meal but we should really have 3 small meals a day and take on more activities. Hard as it is, it’s what we have to do. Sitting at the PC all day isn’t good for our weight

Hi Adrienne,
I sure do have a great community behind me here, it’s pretty amazing how so many have reached out to help me. I think my number one blogging tip has to be “get in the mix and start building a blogging community”.
You never need to apologise Adrienne, I know you’ve been busy with your mom’s move and I’m really pleased that you’ve got that sorted now. I hope that you can now find some time to relax and enjoy having your mom so close to you. It must be nice not having to drive over to her place every weekend
Unfortunately bed rest and spinal injuries seem to go hand in hand. At the first sign of a problem the doctors will send you to bed until the issue’s dealt with, and that seems to be taking forever this time. My main concern now is that my recovery can’t really start until the hospital has had their input, which I now fear may be surgery
Thanks for including me in your prayers Adrienne, that’s very kind of you, thanks x
I see from your commentluv link that you’re asking for help, I’ll be over ASAP and see if I can assist in any way.
Have a great weekend Adrienne,

Hi Barry,
Great to read your post from you
And a terrific one it is.
It really does bug me (to be polite, and I’m sure with you, you’d be thinking even worse) how one can be kept waiting and put on lists etc….. with the health system. Then there’s those brainless idiots who take up hospital beds and doctors time because they’ve the money to pay, and is usually for elective surgery or minor mishaps.
Anyway, it is great you’ve some wonderful people who’ve helped you out here so you can concentrate on yourself and wife.
It’s nice to be part of an ‘us’ community.

Hi Julie,
Please don’t get me started on the health system. My wife had a slipped disc and was being messed about waiting for appointments to come through. Eventuall she was sent for a 2nd scan (a year after her first one) which showed that whilst they’d been messing her about the slipped disc had vanished and her vertebrea’s had started collapsing. Which meant that a relatively minor operation had become a major one and still they had her waiting around. I made my wife put a complaint in and on the day she did we got a phone call offering her surgery the following week at a private hospital….. by the same surgeon. Only now he had to perform a major operation and wrap a cage around her vertebrea’s and pin them all together, which is a 4 month recovery period as opposed to 4 weeks.
I’ve been to the hospital once about my current issue and when I saw the doctor he told he was the wrong doctor and would write to my GP (local doctor) and instruct him to re-refer me to the right doctor, which is what I’m now waiting for
Yes it is great to have friends step forward to help me during this difficult period, god knows what i’d have domne without their help.
Thanks Julie, have a great weekend mate.

Nice to have you back Barry!
You surely seem to have undergone a great deal, and I am sorry for not having kept up with posts here as well because my MIL was undergoing surgery as well so needed complete attention all the time.
All that you underwent and felt is something I felt too, and wished someone would come to my rescue as well – but I was lucky to just about find time before her surgery to write my own posts as I had scheduled a few before hand, which was a life-saver!
But yes, there are wonderful online friends who are always ready to help once they know what you are undergoing. And don’t worry about coming over to our blogs to reciprocate, that’s not needed till you are well enough once again.
Take care and enough rest because even your wife would need more of that now. Wishing you quick recovery.

That’s one lesson I’ve learnt through this episode Harleena, to have some reserve posts ready for publishing just in case. Lesson learnt, when I can get back to some form of normality I’ll be writing a few posts so I’m ahead and then get cracking on picking up my plans from where I left off.

Hi Barry,
Good post bringing everything together into one post for the year. I believe that what goes around comes around, so I always help where I can. I saw you having some trouble and made an offer. I’m glad you gave me the chance to guest post for you.
On the other side, you accepted help from us which many people will not do. They are too worried about keeping it their site. But like you said, this is a community and we help each other.
That is a really good tip to tuck away some posts for emergency use, or at least enough time to coordinate some guest posters.
I’m just back from the land of no internet (Arkansas) from working on my retirement home and on my neighbor’s (Dick) bass boat. You see helping and getting help works in both worlds. He was down to my house when I needed him and vice versa. The temps were right at 100 degrees(F) and it was not pleasant, but we got a lot of work done and a good time.
I spent some evenings with Mark Jones (son of Grandpa Jones from the TV show Hee Haw) working on ideas and details of his http://www.markjonesmusiclessons.com. I’ll be writing a post about our discussions to go along with the series I’m writing about building his video training site. Mark is teaching Banjo (clawhammer/frailing style)and we visited with a friend of his who teaches how to play Mountain Dulcimer (judyklinkhammer.com) trying to get her to join us on his site…..the verdict is still out. lol But hey we got to listen to some good free live music at the Dulcimer Shoppe (mcspaddendulcimer.com) and chatting making new friends. I love the small town atmosphere.
Between the work I did get a chance to join the Jones Family Band at the Annual Grandpa Jones Tribute Concert. I was back stage and got to meet Micheal Martin Murphy (country singer) who was playing the second part of the show. After the show I got the chance to jam with some of the Jones Family Band down on the square. Basically I was trying to keep up to them playing my guitar. Ruth McClain Smith pushed me to sing and play with them singing backup and playing. So I reluctantly played and sang an old George Jones tune called ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’. Low and behold we got applause. Thank God! I was shaking in my boots. I’m not used to performing for crowds.
Also from my having fun and talking with folks, I get to build two more web sites for folks, and several others are thinking about it. So working hard, being social being myself and being helpful really paid off this trip. You know the deal…’cast your bread on the water and it will come back to you’.
Be well my friend. You are in our prayers.
Jay
Hi Jay,
I’m hoping that this isn’t an end of year round up as I have loads that I’d like to achieve before Big Ben chimes 2013.
I also beleive that what goes around comes around and also offer my help when and where it’s needed. Your post is a great one Jay, its one that we all need to be aware of so I was really pleased to publish it here, especially with the added bonus of your eBook. Thanks again for that Jay
I’m glad that you managed to get some work done on your retirement home. What will you do once you’ve moved if you can’t get the internet in Arkansas? Or is it just a case of wiring you up once the move is complete?
It sounds like you had a great time whilst you were there Jay, making new contacts and opening new avenues for work. Like you said cast your bread on the water…. That’s great news Jay, best of luck with it all
Thanks Jay, I hope you’re having a nice relaxing weekend.

Yes, you and the others mentioned in the post sure have kept my blog alive in my absense, thank you. It really does mean a lot to me Sylviane, to have such helpful friends really has helped keep my sanity together.
This medical issue I have is only temporary and won’t keep me down, I’ve put in far to much work for that to ever happen.
I totally understand, and agree with, your comment about what we keep in our minds will do 99% of the work for us. It does get hard to stay positive at times but as I said I’ve worked to hard to let this relatively small issue beat me
Thanks Sylviane, I hope you’re having a great weekend.

I am so sorry for the tough time you are going through health – wise. Health can be a funny thing, you might take care of it but it may back fire anyhow.
I am glad that you managed to keep your blog busy otherwise too. Real life does get in the way of online life and it might be a little tiring trying to manage both. I am glad you had friends around who helped.
Hope your wife is doing better.

Yes our health can be a funny thing. We take care of ourselves to the best of our abilities and boom along comes a problem that stops us in our tracks. It’s only a matter of time before I’m back at it properly, I just wish that time would hurry itself up a bit
My wife is recovering very well now thanks Hajra.
Thanks Hajra, I hope your week has started well

I’m new here. Found you through retweet.
Sorry to learn about all the health issues you and your wife are dealing with. I know how stressful each day can be, but health needs to be a person’s number one priority and it is quite understandable when we can’t do as much as we could before. As you mentioned, yours is temporary, and I hope your doctors get things sorted out for you quickly!
5 years ago I was operating a business from home and out of the blue my husband was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We were quite scared and our focus immediately shifted from the business to figuring out what we needed to do to deal with his health. But we did what we needed to do at the time, as you are as well.
Best to you and your wife!!

Sorry to hear that your husband was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic but pleased to hear that you were able to focus on what needed to be done at the time to allow you to move on. I hope that your husband is able to deal with his condition and that it doesn’t hold him back at all.
Thanks again for coming over Sicorra and leaving a comment.

You never do know what hurdles are coming your way and it’s impossible to be prepared for all the possibilities. The key is to keep going and make your way through as best you can – and that’s exactly what you’re doing, and you’re being an inspiration as you do it. I’m so sorry about all the health problems, for both you and your wife. But you should know that your story and strength are inspiring and encouraging to everyone else who’s just getting through life, too.
It’s good to see you back, even for a short while as you recover, and I’m sending many good thoughts and wishes your way. Ping me if there’s anything I can do to help, too. If you need a guest post or anything else, let me know.

Its so frustrating isn’t it…. we’ve both worked really hard on getting ourselves out there and then along comes our health and puts the kibosh on it all. My Alexa ranking dropped from 95K to 240K so quickly it was frightening, still looking on the bright side Dee Ann, we still have our contacts who will come flooding back once we can get ourselves out there again. Unfortunately I may be a while yet as I’n STILL waiting to see the doctor for him to assess the problem, then he’ll have to book me in to resolve it…. More time waiting

Hi Baz, back online at last, after 7 months. Sorry it’s been so long, but circumstances have had adverse effects on my year too; not health, but pretty nasty. Had to kill three of my blogs and sites due to hackers too! Absolutely nowt I could do to fix ‘em – 4 years’ works down the Swannie.
I’m sorry to hear of your health problems, and hope the medics do something quickly.
It’s encouraging to se that so many people have responded and commented. Although you may not have met many personally; it shows that there really are some caring decent folks out here, and that they value a visit to your blog.

Now that you’ve got your blog back can I recommend some plugins to help prevent it in future:

All can be found in the Add New Plugin area of your admin panel and you can set them to email you went an attempt is made on your site. These alone won’t fully protect you Alan but they’ll help. Dee Ann Rice has a membership site due for launching soon, which is Blog Security Defender. I’ve seen the insides Alan and know that this is going to help loads of bloggers secure their blogs. All the very best for 2013 and remember I’m here if you need any help or advice.
